Hello all, I was playing a game tonight and I came to a couple conclusions and wanted to hear some responses. The particular game I was playing was 1,000 point objective mission against Necron. I'll try to write up a mini battle-report when I can and post it in the batrep forum. Even though I had killed more points-wise, it was a draw as neither of us were able to contest the other side's objective. I ran my 1,000 pt. list which can be found in the army builder section (the one with an HQ in a chim, 6 infantry squads with an assortment of GL's and AC's and LC's, 2 PCS, 2 Leman Russ). Here are my thoughts:
HQ squad in a Chim: Good choice. The Chim withstood some fire and survived, the command squad issued some orders, and I was able to at least advance somewhat across the board and close to the objective. Chimeras are great in 5th.
Grenade Launchers: Definitely a so/so choice for me. Since I run an infantry-heavy list the lasgun order is somewhat wasted here. For 5 points it is an 'ok' choice, but definitely not great one way or another.
Lascannons in Infantry Squads: Fail. Losecannons ftl; BS3 hurts. I killed only a few things all game with these. I think I'll probably toss these in heavy weapons teams for twin-linked stuff or into vet squads for better +hit.
AC's in Infantry Squads: Solid. Only 10 points, though it's only AP4 and thus still allows regular saves. They almost always wound though, and forcing armor saves and wounding on 2+'s on MEqs is never bad.
Flamers in PCS: Good. I have them sit back anyways, and flamers on BS3 models are great.
Leman Russ (with LC hull): Awesome. In a 1,000 point list LRMBT are ridiculous. I like the LC hull because pie plates are always headed towards AP3 models anyways, and I picked off quite a few models from the LC with AP2, BS3 and all.
Lasguns with Orders: Great, at least in infantry-heavy armies. I actually racked up quite a few kills this way, and it feels good to roll a ton of dice
Overall, it seems like IG in the new 'dex are slow/bad at objective games unless you have lots of Chimeras or are willing to move around with your infantry squads fairly often. Since I don't have all the Chims to pull off a mech list (nor the money), I may cut my heavy weapons teams out of my infantry squads and make them more mobile to actually contest objectives. I would say LC's are quite weak but maybe doable in Heavy Weapons Teams where they can be twin-linked for killy goodness, otherwise Meltas are probably superior. These are my initial thoughts from my game tonight and I want to hear what others think.
Seems like you had some good games.
I run with grenade launchers in my infantry squads as well and I find them so/so. Some games they do great like popping chimeras and taking out infantry while other games they dont do so great like my friend whos frag round killed his own men and made him lose the game. It was actually funny though cause I said right before he rolls the scatter "Im going to laugh if this hits you and not me." The only reason I still use them is because they are very cheap, they are an assault weapon, and they can take out transports if things get desperate.
The lascannons in infantry squads I can totally agree with. Thats why I run HWS. They hardly miss do to the HQ and the Lord Commissar as well and they really put pressure on the enemy.
Im planning on getting some autocannons in my list as well. Probably just two of them though so I can still have some mobile infantry. And it will have to be in a bigger list of course.
The lascannon of the LRBT doing good for you surprises me. Usually I get so/so results.
Yes the orders really make a naked infantry squad really more of a threat then it was before in 4th. The lasguns will start to bring down a lot more then they did before.
I remember in my first game for IG (Just this Thurs. night, actually) I had 70 points leftover so I bought a vanilla Veteran squad, nothing but lasguns/pistol n chainsword. Mostly they stood in the back (Annihilation) protecting the Russes from assault by nature of standing in the way. Well, until Belial and his entourage consolidated infront of them from an assault. My turn rolled around again, and I gave those Vets the order to FRFSRF into the Terminator's smug faces. 28 BS4 lasgun shots minced a couple of them.
Space Marines: W15/L7/D3
Imperial Guard: W6/L4/D0
Question in regards to Marrius's comment above. Can a Lord Commissar attach to a Heavy Weapons Squad before the game and have both in the Chimera before the game? If so, that could be a pretty viable option; I mean I guess you lose out on the ability to receive orders, but the squad gets much higher survivability.
I'm actually a big fan of the lasgun order, have been since I first saw it. I run infantry-heavy lists and I always seem to roll extremely well on my lasgun shots (ex. I'll shoot 12 lasguns and I'll end up knocking down 3-4 Necron Warriors), hence me thinking about taking the heavy weapons out and running more mobile - instead of static - squads. Just a thought.
I think this cropped up somewhere before here. As rules go i don't think they can. It's the Commissars dedicated transport. Squads can't deploy in someone elses dedicated transport at the start of the game BUT IC can.
Iagree with you on the lascannons in the Inf squads though. I ran them for ages but i just got fed up of the 7 lasguns doing nothing in the squads so i changed the lascannons to missile launchers. (when i can find some of the darn classic cadian launchers on Ebay that is)
FRFSRF is an awesome order and it really starts to pound the enemy when they get into rapid fire range. Guard are hidious when you get up close and personal. with all the cheap ass flamers, heavy flamers, demo charges and mass lasgun fire around i sometimes feel sorry for the chaos scum than get into that 12" kill zone.
Another thing i've had alot of sucess with is my Chimera Melta Vets, this squad carrys an additional powerfist and Demolitions. Theres not one thing this squad can't kill. It even took out a prop podding 9man Stern Guard and a Captain in one turn through Democharge, melta, shotgun and combat! They've aways earned their points back.
Sod the Spanish inquisition. "no one suspect the Democharge"
I usualy field a veteran squad with 3 plasma guns and a primaris psyker in a chimera, they are just soo deadly up close. Also by using the bring it down order they can crush any MC in a single turn. Just imagine 6 twin linked plasma shots and 2d6 twin linked S6 shots...
