I'm new to daemon hunters and am useing them in my local hobby shop league , and there are two IG players in it. I was wondering if you vets out there could give me some competative ideas for lists for dealing with masses of infentry and tanks! (. Oh my! )
I sort of wanted to give them a taste of their own medicen by takeing a leman russ or two, I personaly like to take lots of IST and a squad or two of GK. Any advice for a ratio ? And how to use them I'm open to anything.
Lastly how should I build my inquisitorial retnue ,heavy bolter spam?
If you know what sort of set-up the Guard players normally run it'd be easier to give you advice. Psycannons make a nice counter to Guard vehicles which are mostly AV10 on the Rear armour, especially if you put them on DSing Termies, while Grey Knights will rip through massed Guardsmen like a knife through butter.
As far as the =][= build goes I'd take a Termie Lord with a Psycannon and 3 Vets with Grenade Launchers. 155pts gets you a BS4 Relentless Psycannon and 3 BS4 Grenades every turn, plus you can throw a few extra Henchmen in there so's there's more wounds
In order to get a LR, you need to get 2 infantry platoons first, and that's in addition to your HQ + 2 troop choices from the DH codex. Very costly, but then again, it'll be kinda cool also. You'll look more like an IG army with 2 platoons than a DH one.
For me, I use Land Raiders & Grey Knights. The thing about the guards is that you want to assault them as quickly as possible to minimize their shooting. Land Raiders get me there quickly as well as offer protection. You're almost guaranteed a 2nd round assault with them. Move 6" and fire 2 lascannons at a tank (or even at 2 different tanks) 1st turn. Then on 2nd turn, move 12", disembark 2", fire a lascannon from the LR, and assault with your knights. For this to work properly, you should get 2 land raiders. With just 1, he has a good chance to take it down. With 2, you have a good chance of 1 of them reaching his lines.
For Inq retinues, depends whether you go up against MEQ's or guards/hordes. Against MEQ's I would go like this:
2x sages, 1x mystic (or 2x if you have a lord), 2x vets w/plasmaguns, 1x servitor w/plasma cannon
And against guards/swarms:
2x sages, 1x mystic (or 2x if you have a lord), 3x vets w/Heavy Bolters
to induct, it will depend on what set of rules your FLGS league is following. For Instance, the US 'ard boys tourney is allowing Vets, and allowing a Leman Russ squadron for induction, as well as both types of sentinels.
2009 US 'ard boys rules
ask what rules they are using for inductions.
and for Inquisitor dakka..
DH Inq. Lord w/psycannon
1plasma cannon Servitor
He can deal with a lot of stuff with the plasma cannon thrown in.

If you are planning on using only 2 PAGK units, you could just take an IG army, and fit those 2 PAGK in the army, with vendatta's for example.
Don't forget the PAGK can still easily damage a tank when they get the charge on those IG tanks. They all have a terrible rear amor, which is great for our NFW's

JY is spot on. Get your infantry into combat with his infantry ASAP. This does 2 things for you - eliminates the assaulted units ability to do anything (and you should beat them in combat...)
Plus - it prevents anything from shooting at YOUR units since they are locked in combat...9 Russes do no good with no targets they can shoot at.
Make use of your cover saves for your vehicles...take smoke (ours is GREAT) and pop it as you rush towards the enemy in your 3 Land Raiders (or variants).
I also find the Callidus handy as you get an automatic glance with the flamer - Mech Guard usually have to bunch some of their vehicles together...she's also good for command squads
What is best in life? To crush your enemies, to see them fall at your feet -- to take their horses and goods and hear the lamentation of their women. That is best!
Best way to deal with heavy shooters is well for me i take pretty much a pure grey knight force with 2 10 sqds of grey knights in power armor with 2 psycannons each. I have them camp on the board edge spread out in a line so that a slight template scatter might result in 1 grey knight it or none if anything 2 tops depends on the scatter but u get the point. deep strike 8 to 10 sqd of termies with 4 psycannons 1 on captain one on inquistor who is attack with termie armor and 2 on the sqd, have land raider in reserves. 1st turn of shooting. Pick off the weakest targets, easy kill points like heavy weapon teams the S6 causes instant death. Use shrouding to protect u from guard gunline
once they realise that it is very difficult to hit u they will move foward. Usually ur land raider will come in around that time have it come in from the corners so u can get side armor on there mechs. Ur termies will also becoming in too pick a really weak flank like 1 with mass inf or where heavy weapons r. wheter u choose to fire with them or run to spread them out is circumstance and up to ur judgement. U can either move the grey knighst in power armor up to face the tanks. If u do remeber to keep them in a straight line 2 inch apart to reduce damage from templates. Then just catch them in a gaunlet and try to play conservative and pick ur battles well.
These tatics are a lean a little bit more to annilation ,but I'm sure u can take the principal out of this and apply to fit the scenario. Good luck!
Inq w/LR for a ride
BC w/ psycannon
3x dreadnoughts w/ TLLC & ML
3x Knights with Psycannons.
When I played my guard against the above DH list, I got my rear handed to me because I focused too much on the LR and was melta-light. I had two tanks, Master of Ord, a Manticore, and four Chimeras. His dreads tore me up.
So play the above list, throw the LR into the middle of his line, and take out every piece of armor with the dreads. If your IG players are smart, they will ignore the LR. However, the LR is a hard thing to ignore.
My last batlle with IG was 2500 points each
I won and my tactic was simple. Give them nothing to shoot at. (Very frustrating for an IG player)
First according to imperial armour and some errata ( I'm sorry I don't remember which or where but they're official your opponent can't wine a lot about it, I'll try to find them and post them) you can mount a grey knight dreadnought on a drop pod, I have three and mounted them all in drops pods( the shrouding rule does not aply to Dreadnoughts, just to clear this up ), the cheapest way to fulfil the troop requirements are 2 five man stormtrooper squads, with 2 flamers each they worth 60 pts each, and you simply hide them waiting if someone aproaches them and woooooooosh, ok we are minus 120 pts, then here comes the fun part.
You buy an orbital strike, preferably Lance strike , str 10 ap 1, ( I took out a monolith once but that was insaaaaaane luck) and place it on a terrain between 2 others as it will aaaaaaaalways scatter.
O.k you are now at minus 190 points, and as for the dreads you leave them as they are, you can take incinerators and equip one of them with lascannon but its then a bit overpriced.
The three dreads on drop pods with locator beacons and with incinerators and extra armor worth a total(without lascannon) of 525 pts, 175 each
You are at a total of 715 pts, now use up all 3 fast attack choices with GKs in deep strike and 2 psycannons in each squad ( you already have a lot of flamers) and buy a teleport homer in each justicar, you cannot use the teleport homer the same turn the unit arrive but you can use the locator beacon on a drop pod. The HQ will probably be a cheap brothercaptain with GK termies with him carrying also psycannons.
Deep strike, deep strike deep after that.
The roster wins always but it has the miiiiinor disadvantage (big one actually) that it doesnt have a lot of troop choices, if you buy 2 cheap rhinos(no extra armor) for the stormtroopers, hide the rhinos well and use them when the time is right to run to the objectives.
