The Guard has so many choices that it is sometimes hard to decide what to give them. Pretty soon, I'm getting a Cadian Battleforce and was really stumped on what to get each squad and vehicle. I was thinking of a command squad, two veteran squads with special and heavy weapons and an armoured sentinel. I just dont know what to get them in terms of special and heavy weapons. Help please. Even just an over-all review of each weapon would be great.
What role do you want for your units? (Emphasis on singular "role")
Few roles to choose from really.
Basically line up, give cover saves to people behind. Get shot at, go to ground. Maybe a cheap grenade launcher?
Mobile line squad
Stick in a meltagun and provoke a tank shock while staying mobile to plug holes in your lines.
Mobile fire support/counter attack (Command squads do this much better as they can take 4 special weapons, for shooting specials stick them in Company Command Squads as they have BS4)
Basically mount them on chimeras, keep them out of harms way, in the decisive moment, drive them 12, disembark and give the enemy hell. Usually when they are about to assault your lines. 4 flamers for Platoon Command Squad, 3 plasmas and 1 medic for Company Command Squad with BS4.
Base of fire
Combine a few squads with heavy weapons like Lascannons and put them on your objective. They are extremely hard to dislodge if you have picket lines to block charges.
Don't use your guardsmen for fire power. They are there to prevent your enemy from getting into close combat with your tanks. Leman Russes ARE your firepower for killing enemy infantry. Leave the tanks to your base of fire armed with Lascannons.
