Last time I played WH: 40k was in 3rd ed. After looking threw the rule book and new codex I'm not sure how to build a space marine army any more. I use to do troop heavy salamander army in rhinos and razerbacks. With the change to tac squards my old tatics no longer work, and how shooting before assult phase works now my old tatic no long works ether. Anyone have any tips or any thing to help me? thank you.
The Salamanders is still a valid army! With the Vulkan He'stan model available soon, you can have a very solid core with good anti-tank and anti-infantry capabilities using his special rules. Some ideas to renew your army:
1. Get a Land Raider Redeemer. While it can't benefit from Vulkan's special rule, it's so fitting to have one in a Salamanders army.
2. For infantry use flamers in your Tactical squads and heavy flamers in your Sternguard squads, while going the multi-melta route for anti-tank. Having 2 twin-linked multi-meltas on a Landspeeder is too good to miss.
3. Get or proxy Vulkan He'stan. I like his rules, and if I wasn't a purist Ultramarines player I'd use him.
Sallies are seriously great with Vulkan now. You will need to change your wargear and tactics, but a troop-heavy marine army is still very viable!
My personal opinion, poke your old marines into 5th ed. shape, get them all legal, then give them a try! You might be VERY surprised! =)
