Basically I have a platoon in which all the squads have plasma guns and a heavy weapon. Do people think autocannons work best with similar strength or lascannon for the similar AP, I've had people come down on both sides so I want to canvass some more opinions...
Mkay first, what do you expect to kill with the plasma guns? Light tanks or heavy infantry? When you have that answer, take the auto-cannon alongside for the light tank hurting, or lascannon to keep up with the AP2 and scare away the terminators.
Personally, I would take the auto-cannon for a few reasons;
A. 2 shots v 1 shot with a guardsman BS, with our foot troops its quantity over quality.
B. Cost, keep it limited since the plasma gun is now more expensive, and the auto-cannon 10pts less than the lascannon.
C. Orders, BRING IT DOWN makes auto-cannons much more reliable to put down tanks instead of whiffing on that one lascannon shot, not to mention it lets your guard reroll over heating from the plasma.
D. Can hurt TEQ's and any high T troops with some ease.
To sum up, Plasma/auto combo lets you hurt those transport tanks carrying the enemies assault troops, keeps TEQ troops at distance, and allows you to increase your volume of high powered shots at a relatively cheap price.
So anyways, I feel the auto-cannon outshines the lascannon in normal squads and keep in mind basic inf squads aren't here to bust open monoliths and landraiders.
In my army I stick with GL/ML combo because I love saturating the field with blast templates at an extremely cheap price.
Hope this helps you decide

Imperial Guard 5000pts
AC is cheaper and better against light vehicles, while lascannons do more to MCs and heavier vehicles (not terribly effective at it, but still).
I wouldn't bother with the plasma gun really, it's very pricy for a single S7 shot or 2 at "my unit is dead, go out with style" range. If you bring a special weapon, I like flamers, grenade launchers, or melta. GLs add a small blast or single S6 shot for cheap, flamers and meltas deter baddies from getting too close.

Gotta agree with lorddent, the Autocannons with the plasma would give you more bang for your buck, however I have one very important question: what army do you fight most often? (I'm used to fighting space marines and units with good armor values so the AP 1on lascannons is nice and so is the AP 3 plasma).
Since this is a infantry killing squad go with AC. Never good to mix up rolls for squads. Especially it would make more sense for IG to have deticated rolls. Leave the Lascannons to heavy weapon squads.
Also crappy BS means 2 shots better =)

What is your role of your infantry?
Kill heavy armor, kill MEQ, kill hordes, kill light armor, screen, tarpit, hold objectives, ect?
What does the rest of your army have, what does it need?
Infantry based Lascannons are not the big bad boy they were in 4ed, the role of tank killer has fallen to the meltagun and Vendetta.
Do you have ample amounts of meltaguns (ideally in CCS and Vet squads mounted in chimeras), you need them to handle enemy armor.
Do you have a Vendetta or two to help pop armor at a distance?
If you have enough anti armor from these units then you do not need to waste points on BS3 Lascannons. However... if you do not have the meltaguns/vends... then you will need to make it up by taking Lascannons
Personally, when i'm not running mech, my infantry squads go AC/melta (in addition to CCS w/ meltas and some Vets w/ melta and a Vend). However, AC/plasma is a excellent anti AV11 unit and is respectable at killing MC and infantry
shrug, it depends if you're outfitting all your regular infantry squads the same way or diversifying their roles. either way, i'd still rather keep all my autocannons tucked away on just 4 of my 6 scout sentinels.
generally i prefer 3 set-ups.
my mobile squads field only meltaguns or flamers,
my core squads field missile/grenade launchers for versatility with krak/frag (4 blasts plus las-storm from a 20-man combined squad is outstanding)
and my anti-heavy squads fielding the ap2 lascannon/plasma combo for use against heavy infantry or vehicles.
i'm a very big supporter of running infantry squads in combined squads of preferably 20 men when keeping them on foot. the combined amount of heavy/special weapons and lasguns makes each one an effective firebase, having the output of a HWS while all the additional lasguns to use as buffer wounds as well as potshots (over 50 las-shots when at 12" range and frfsrf lasgun order when at full strength).
Autocannons, simply because for a BS3 model it's at least 50% likely to hit once, las cannons and plasma guns are just a waste in my opinion on BS3 models, prefer the GL or flamer.
Well whatever.. First off I as ==ThatGuy== wouldn't want to equip standard troopers with plasma guns for several reasons..
Still if I had to choose it'd have to be the lascannon, firing the plasmagun at light vehicles seems like wasting it's low ap potential to me.. it costs more than an autocannon and is less then half as effective against light vehicles..
