I'm starting a Space Wolf army later this year and I'm trying to make having a second space marine army worth it to me. My current army is, fluff wise (DIY chapter), very troop heavy and doesn't utilize a lot of armored support. So with the Space Wolves being a strong assaulting force and known to have some of the oldest Dreadnoughts in the Imperium plus being the only space marine force to run the Leman Russ they seem ideal for mechanized support. But I'm new to running armor as a primary form of support.
Going with a mechanized army means Predators, Rhinos, Dreads, and possibly a Leman Russ or Land Raider. What would be the best combination to stick into my heavy support choice? My feeling would be 2 Predators and a Land Raider Crusader if I field Wolf Guard terminators, otherwise 2 Predators and a Leman Russ. Both Predators will probably be magnetized to allow me to field both variants, the tank is built to be versatile so I'll keep it that way.
The reason I chose against the Vindicator was due to its lack of range. The Vindicator is a force to be reckoned with, but having armored support whose range is the same as the basic Blood Claw's boltgun feels a little off. And the Whirlwind could be an option but I honestly feel a Whirlwind could be easily supplemented by an Autocannon and Heavy Bolter Predator.
Now, about the Leman Russ. How often do Space Wolf players utilize these? Is the Exterminator the only variant Wolves are allowed to field? I'd like to think that despite the Leman Russ being an Imperial Guardsman tank that the Wolves could arm a chasis however they want. I mean the tank IS named after THEIR primarch.
Thanks for any and all input!
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the response DiW, I know you're a knowledgable and prominent SW player here so it's good to get your input on the subject!
My reasoning for leaning towards armored support to an assault army (I do know that Space Wolves are very CC oriented I guess I didn't make it clear I didn't understand) is because of how I'm running my DIY chapter. It's led by a "counts as" Sicarius with the intention of that army being, more or less, a foot slogger force. It's meant to be troop heavy to capitalize on Sicarius.
The other reason is based on a brief piece of lore I read. I honestly don't know that it's true and it's highly possible I literally dreamed this up but I somehow made it make sense. I read that the Space Wolves were, at one point, the creators and/or most well known users of an older/original Predator variant (After the Heresy era). Plus with the amount of Dreadnoughts they are known to use I would assume that they have a respectable forgeworld either on Fenris or easily accessible (They're pretty close to Terra, which is in turn close to Mars). I can also see that tracked vehicles would do well on snowy and mountainous worlds. Not to mention, there are 12 (13) Great Companies. At least one is bound to field more armor than another!
Thanks for correcting me on the unit type, I'm very new to Space Wolves and can't find the codex I have (had?). So that's also part of why I posted this, to get some insight on how viable this would work.
Mech SW would be quite good.
Grey Hunters in Rhinos or Razors would be fantastic mobile units, capable of shooting things up and chopping if they get charged.
Blood Claws work better in a Land Raider since they can assault out of it, which is always worth it thanks to high AV. A lot of armies just can't handle AV14, so it will draw a ton of fire away from your more vulnerable vehicles. Rhinos + counter-charge work just as well too.
I'm not sold on the Russ, it's pretty pricy and can only fire 1 weapon on the move. I'd rather have 2 Predators.
The vindicator is nice, but since you want to get up close and personal it may not be the best pick.
Something like 2-3 GH squads in Rhinos, BC or Termies in a LRC, Multi-melta/Heavy Flamer Speeders, 2 Predators, Wolf Scouts, and Dreads would make for a nice mech force.
