Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was wondering if anybody here has played against necrons before and if so what were some suggestions you could give me on going against them. I have already found that venerable dreadnoughts and chronus are nice against their gauss rule. I was just wondering if anybody found some other things that worked really well against them.
ok well when I went against necrons I took a AOBR marine set with an extra tactical squad. Then I chose a chapter master and gave him a relic blade and artificer armor. His orbital bombardment will work well but remember, you can only use it once. I then took 2 missile launchers but if u have plasmaguns, I think those would work better. As for tactics, stay in cover, deepstrike your terminators, give your missile launchers or plasma guns a good LOS and use kraks against his heavy destroyers if he has any. Try to also take out his pesky warriors first as this makes up a bundle of his army and it might cause him to phase out. Use the orbital bombardment for this. This lead me to a victory against a 1000 pt necron army But I'm sure there are better tactics out there.
Larry, this question is too open-ended so that's probably why there's a lot of views and very little replies.
Generally Necrons are weak in close combat, and with the 5th Ed rules for close combat penalties, it's very deadly for them if you can close in and destroy a lot of them. When you consider their low Initiative, almost any assault worthy unit out there should attack.
As you play Necron players you will learn of the annoying "We'll Be Back" rule. Basically what you should do is to learn what denies this, such as double strength weapons and power weapons. You will also learn that Necron players usually keeps similar units together as part of this rule.
Lastly, try to always focus your fire on the units that are "Necrons". I know this sounds silly at first, but these units are the ones that will count towards his phase out rule. Ignoring units that don't count towards his phase out limit is a good strategy. It's an "evil" way of beating Necrons, but it was supposedly put into their Codex to balance their advantages.
Second the "too open-ended" comment, but as a Necron player, here are some general tips:
-- Phase out: Learn what it is, and how it works. It is your friend, especially if he brings "big" stuff to the game.
-- Close combat: Another bane of the Necron army. They have a far better chance of winning a shooting war. Nothing more demoralizing to a Necron player than losing a warrior squad to sweeping advance. Sometimes even locking in combat is enough. Destroyers and Heavy Destroyers are at their best when zipping around the battlefield poking holes in you. Locking them in combat makes them useless.
-- Scoring units: As of this writing, warriors are the only things in the entire Necron army that can take objectives (but look for that to change when the new codex comes out, whenever that is). Knock out his warriors, and the best he can hope for is a draw. This isn't so hard if (IF!) you can get a cc-heavy crew into melee. Bring some power weapons and watch him go boom.
-- The monolith: A frightening sight, and for good reason. It's the toughest vehicle in the game, but it has limits, and more importantly, it eats into the Necron player's points. Your best bet? Ignore it and go for phase out (see above).
-- C'Tan: Harder to avoid than the Monolith, as they tend to be played aggressively. Don't waste your elite cc units on it, as there is little that can touch it other than power fists, and unless you have a BIG meatshield, you'll never get the chance. Best to wear him down from a distance with snipers, then finish him off with a fist. These guys are also huge point sinks, so if you have nothing that can fight them, try to ignore the star gods and focus on phase out (see above).
-- Scarabs. Not too dangerous, even en masse, but they can be a major "tarpit" unit. Don't let your tactical squads or scouts get stuck. Instead, hit them with a good counter-charge unit. This can be assault marines, or any squad with lots of power weapons. They also don't like templates, so be sure to bring the flamers and blast weapons.
My apologies on the opened endedness of the question. I was just wondering if some other players had found a certain strategy that was very successful when going against necrons. Anyway, thanks for the comments again. Just thought I would try to get some new fresh ideas when going against my friend. He just started using some new units (immortals and wraiths mainly) and I had some trouble with them in my last game. He has used the Ctan before and I have found ways to take care of him, and his monolith is normally something that I have found leaving alone a good policy. Anyway, thanks again.
Immortals can be nasty (one of my favorite units). Again, locking them in combat is best. Even then, a lord can teleport them away. Watch out for them. Wraiths can be deadly, but they come in small numbers, and in a protracted combat (lasting more than 1-2 phases) these killing machines get real fragile.
Overall advice: get into combat with them. They can't fight well that way, and they'll lose their strength: shooting.
As a Blood Angels player I find closing the distance and locking myself in melee is the way to go. I avoid the C'tan as much as possible. Wear it down from range then finish it. Avoid Monoliths as people have mentioned.
I have good initiative with the Corbs build I use and have had no problem doing sweep combats with warriors. I actually had overkill problems with a lot of my assault squads.
I use a Vindicator to take out mobs of units, scarabs, warriors etc. If I have a good shot vs a monolith I'll take it if out of range for other priority targets. Usually hard to miss a monolith and taking it out sure removes a lot of bite from a Necron army.
Land speeders to take care of destroyers and other potential nasty stuff. Just charge and go for phase out
I like to kill the C'tan as quick as I can, as marines cant hurt him in combat. He's also not a necron so he doesn't affect phase out, but when you have a land raider, a venerable dread with twin linked las, and missle launcher, and a terminator squad with assault cannon; he goes down fast. I can't sugar coat it wraiths and immortals are nasty. I havn't faced immortals in a long time (probably use assault terminators or sternguard against em though), wraiths on the other hand just need to be taken down through shear number of saves, the more you wound them the more likely they'll go down. Might I suggest shrike as your HQ with a unit of 10 vanguard with jump packs and power weapons. They'll first turn assault, and will likely screw any of his units. IMO
