I used to play WH:40k years back(IG then DE).
Well its been many years and I have the itch to get back into the game - if only for the painting and modeling aspect(People that frequent GW stores can be a bit obnoxious in my experiences - its hard to find cool people to play with). Like I said its been years so I have a very vague recollection of the rules and I'm sure a lot has changed with new Codexs and all - so bare with me.
I'm interested in going Space Marines even though I used to despise them since they kicked ass and everyone plays them =P. More specifically, I'm either going Space Wolves(love the fluff and models), or Salaamanders(love the paint scheme and flamers are always fun).
I've been skimming around these forums for a few days and I gather that SW's are getting a new Codex "soon". Are there certain models that will remain unchanged? So that if I purchase them and paint them - they wont become outdated when the new codex comes out? I'm guessing maybe I should just wait for the new codex to drop since I'm assuming there will be some new models along with it. But I'm sort of ancy to get a few models now and begin painting.
Anyway - just thought I'd introduce myself and get some input. Thanks in advance.
Well, plain old Marines with bolters are always there - no danger of them disappearing.
With Space Wolves, marines with pistols and chainswords are a pretty safe bet, too.
Dreadnoughts are a staple of every Marine list, so if you were to snag one, he's pretty much guaranteed to be useable (keep the arms swappable, though).
Greetings and welcome back to the hobby!
Those are two armies with very different play styles. Space wolves are definitely geared towards close combat. I'm no expert on them so I'll leave their pros and cons to somebody with better experience.
Salamanders, on the other hand, are very much geared towards close range firefights then following up with the kill shot in CC. This is not to say they don't do well in close combat, but with the predisposition towards using flamers and melta weapons described in their fluff supports this. Their fluff revolves around the Promethian cult, which relies on the hammer and fire as their symbols, makes painting and converting them fun.
Some common units you'll find when fielded are: Sternguard w/ combi-meltas and combi-flamers, TH/SS Terminators, melta armed Dreadnoughts and Ironclads, Land raider Redeemers, flamer/meltagun/multi-melta Tacticals squads, Captains and Chaplains are just a few examples. An army list I used in my last tournament can be found here.
In 5th edition Salamanders have been given some GW love with Vulkan He'stan. His special rules really bring out the inner pyromaniac in the Salamanders by making all Thunder hammers, flamers, and melta weapons master crafted. This makes the above units particularly nasty. He is, however, a very popular character because of this.
So, if you're looking for a more shooty army between the two you can't go wrong with the Salamanders.
Sorry for the rambling wall of text...I tend to do that.
Good luck and I hope this was helpful.

Salamander project log
Thanks Chirality, I appreciate the input. I'm still kind of tossed up about which Army I want to collect, I have a soft spot for Catachan since thats what I collected first(years back). But they are so specialized that they can't really hold their own other than on jungle boards(even then I had trouble).
So I want to collect an army thats a little more 'hearty' so I can make some mistakes and still have a chance. Not to mention the dice gods rarely favor me. Hence I'm leaning SM.
We'll see though, I'll check out the new codexs and see what jumps out at me.
