Iíve been collecting IG models for a while in anticipation of a year-long trip for work. My plan has been to do all the assembly when I got where I was going. Well, the moment has finally arrived. Iím shooting for around 10,000 points over the next year, but more specifically Iím going to build all my infantry models in the next two months. Iíll paint the in the next four, and devote the other six months to tanks and characters.
I also hope to make weekly posts, based off of the cool project done by another LO member, whom Iíll have to credit when I track down his awesome blog.
I would like some advice from the group before I actually commence my assembly next week. I have plenty of Kasrkins (around 120 ) that will become my carapace veterans and stormtroopers. I also plan to build three full infantry platoons (no conscripts). This is where I need the most help. I have no experience as a company commander, and I have only played against the guard a handful of times. I would like some advice on configuring my three platoons:
1) I would like be able to play with only the compulsory (HQ, 2 Troops) force organization choices at 1750 points. In a quick look I realized that would be extremely easy, and maybe not even two full platoons. Again, no conscripts, what would be an optimal configuration of two full platoons and a company command squad?
2) To further refine my goals, I would like the platoons to have a cohesive feel to them. My three concepts are the hammer, spear, and shield. The hammer would primarily be there to crush hardened targets (tanks, dreads, monstrous creatures). The spear would be a flexible platoon, good for offense, defense, moving, or stability. I suppose the spear would be versatile but a little mobile. The shield unit I imagined as having a defensive role. Perhaps thwarting the attacks of the hordes and softer targets. I understand that for the compulsory army only two of these three concepts would be utilized, but I still think it could be an enjoyable intellectual challenge for you all.
3) Iím looking to use the platoon command, line squads, heavy weapon squads, and special weapon squads within the platoon to help support each other. I would like them to complement each other within the concepts listed above as much as possible. Iím also not looking for a specific list as the single greatest. In addition, Iíve both won and lost enough games in the past that Iím not looking for a one-trick pony, but a versatile enough infantry to compete with any opponent.
I really appreciate your inputs and hopefully this can spark a healthy debate. Thanks for all the great discussions that Iíve already learned from, and thanks in advance for the help.
quick glance and take:
using two infantry platoons, i'd say field in the first one, field 2 heavy weapon squads to be your hammer, with maybe 4 infantry squads with only special weapons in them to act more as your shield.
and in the second platoon, take 2-3 infantry squads (special weapons only as well) plus the platoon command all in chimeras (al'rahem outflanking all of them is optional), to act as your spear force.
that's a pretty well-rounded versatile force to base the rest of your army FoC choices around and gives you a bit of everything to deal with what comes at you in an 'all comers' list.
Thanks for the quick and dirty. I think Chimeras are awesome, and I plan to build around a dozen. However, that wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I probably overstated or overcomplicated my original post. I have that problem in real life, too.
I would like to build a tournament-sized army using only infantry and only the compulsory FOC. This probably means:
1) Company command squad
2) Two platoons. Both of which will have command squads, but both will also have four or five basic squads, more than three heavy weapons squads, and both special weapons squads.
I am working on this concept, and trying to figure out how (without vehicles or special characters) this basic structure could produce a cohesive and well-rounded fighting force.
I'm pretty sure it can be done, and I'm pretty sure I want to try it. I also figure I'll need three full platoons, as some tournaments in my area go up to 2500 points. I thought the idea of a command squad and two to three platoons as a complete fighting force would be both challenging and unique.
Thank you all again for your inputs. I'm more worried about the roles of the platoons and the roles of the squads within the platoons for a balanced force.
Thanks again Certs, and thanks to everyone else in advance!
Hmm, that's certainly an interesting concept.
For an infantry heavy army, I consider Creed a must.
Here's one idea
CCS-Creed, Camo Cloaks, Astropath, vox, mortar
2x PCS-2 flamers/grenade launchers
6x infantry squads-melta, Sergeant w/ power weapon (1 Commissar with power weapon and vox per 3 units, making 2 super units of 31 models)
4x infantry squads-lascannon, vox
6x HWS-3 autocannons
You have a mean static fire base plus 2 big glob platoons to surprise people. One glob can outflank and cause problems, while the other advances or protects your gunline.
Expanding, just add more HWS with autocannons.
