so im comming back to 40k after a family/army forced vacation and ive been reading that the IG have become a heavy hitting army....is this really true? When i played them before they required some tactful handling to be succesful... also what are the new "powergamers" armies?
yea, guard are pretty heavy hitting now and no longer the 'underdog' army they were, but that's just the current trend of powercreep in the new codex releases. i'd say overall, not as much tactics required as previous, what with all our new tricks/weapons/abilities to make up for it.
for most people, the competitive list to use is the full mech list with 2-3 valk/vend gunships supporting and with your troop choices as veteran squads w/ 3 meltaguns either in said valk/vend gunships or in chimera. and a few people rock out the 9-valk gunship list with 6 melta-vet squads and 2 melta-ccs squads w/ astropath and master of fleet to rather large success as well.
and don't say "powergamer" as it upsets them and invites backlash.
The days of IG being the whipping boy of 40k are over No longer do IG players have to spend huge amounts of cash, and endless hours painting, only to get stomped by one of the many MEQ armies (well, the cash/time part is still there).
I personally do not think IG are overpowered in any way, but simply they are now properly updated for 5ed, and have enough firepower to survive/succeed. Players are still getting used to the amount of firepower/armor guard can field, and many people are a little slow in adapting
Like Certs said, mech IG is by far the closest thing we have to a "power" build. Basically Vets with Meltaguns in a Chimera w/ a HHF are the core unit, then take some more AV12 and perhaps some AV14.
You still have to play it correctly, but IG is not as brutally unforgiving as it was before.
glad to here that they have added some balance to the list now...thanks for all the feedback
