There doesn't seem to be a lot of love for the Leman Russ Exterminator. Not that anyone seems to really hate it or anything, but it seems to be getting ignored in discussion and lists.
What does everyone think about the "other" Russ? I've been trying to see how it could be useful. 4 twin-linked autocannon shots and AV14 is nothing to sneeze at, but it feels weird because the AC is a lighter weapon and the russ is usually heavily armed. It would hammer transports and heavy infantry, and with lumbering behemoth, heavy flamer and two plasma cannons it can advance with your footsloggers (if you have any) and provide flexible fire support.
2 Hydras are better for damage output undoubtedly. I don't know, maybe the exterminator IS crap, or maybe it would only shine in specific lists. If so, what sort of list?
Yeah well that's what made me start looking at the Exterminator in the first place - I don't want to have to pay for TWO hydra models!
I was actually thinking about feilding one of these bad boys with Pask in there. 4 Twinlinked BS4 strength 8 shots should be able to cause vehicles some headaches. Can kill Hoards too.
But I got thinking though and really the only thing the Exterminator has over the normal Russ is it's ability to scythe down light Tanks like Skimmers. Other than that thats about it. Troop killing the LRBT has the blast and the AP. Against heavier tanks the LRBT has higher Str and ordinance....
Pask. Put him in the exterminator, and your looking at 4 Twin-Linked Krak Missile Launchers and +1S for whatever else you care to put on it vs vehicles, as long as it sits still. Stupidly expensive points-wise though, and only gets that +1S if it sits still, so yeah.

I guess it boils down to the simple fact that the other LR variants are better, so why have a LR Exterminator when you can have a more killy different type of LR?
And, of course, hydras perform the same task as the exterminator, but better.
But i would love to be able to still field 1 in my space wolf army come the new 'dex.
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

You can field autocannons on just about any unit, Hydras being the obvious choice here. But it's also common to load up all your infantry with the inexpensive autocannons, or throw em on a few sentinels. It's the preferred heavy weapon over the heavy bolter so you'll see a ton of them even without taking the Exterminator. Russes are for much heavier weaponry that are specific to the Russ.
But you know what?.. I'd probably rather field a loaded Exterminator than a Punisher.. If I was going that route. Exterminator with sponson HBs, hull HB, and pintle stubber dishes out 16 shots at great range, great str, and decent AP for the exact same cost as a vanilla Punisher. Put a Pask in that and things get nasty.
I use a Pask Exterminator with mixed results. I find that my large template-throwers lose a lot of effectiveness when the enemy is reduced to 1 or 2 infantry models, which is an ideal target for the Ex. It is also a useful tank against MCs since, otherwise, you only get one wound per blast against them but I really hate to hold still for Pask's benefits...a stationary Russ dies to ANYTHING in close combat.
