I only got back into 40k (had a brief infatuation aged 7) about a week ago and I've already invested around about £70 (yes I'm hasty ). I've ordered Assault on Black Reach and that's in the post with the rulebook, and what I have is already assembled minus my Commander...
Now I *really* enjoy assembling the models and I want to finish the Commander as I've put a lot of work into painting him but I still can't decide what armament to give him... and my knowledge of the rules is terrible: These are suggestions/ideas I've had in mind;
-Power Fist+Bolt Pistol (I hear Iron Halo is already attached to the commander?): I figured that the bolt pistol he can fire before going into assault and the power fist will do a lot of damage... but you have to attack last, right? So the Iron Halo assists? Any ideas on this; please elaborate, I'm just a noob :-/
-Relic Blade? A friend suggested this with a plasma pistol... but reading a post on here, a Relic Blade is a 2h? Does that mean all I can use with it is a storm shield? Could someone elaborate on the rules concerning the use of a Relic Blade and other weapons?
Ofc these ideas could just be bogus... so please, jot down what you use... and why, I'd really like to have some decent ideas
Just out of curiosity did you buy Black reach aswell as a Full rulebook?
Because you do get a mini version with ALL the rules in it. it just misses out the hobby section and fluff
I personally wouldnt use a powerfist on your "captain" (as the main guy is now known as) now is because he has a high iniative to take advantage off. A relic blade will work well with him as you can strike at strength 6, causing Instant death (from what i can remember, havent used it before)
Bolt pistol is free and i'd advise it as you can fire it then still assault. Its annoying how the black reach captain comes with a boltgun stuck to him.
Hope that helps. anymore questions?
My advice is to go with a relic blade, his I means that he will attack before most things, wound them on 2+ and ignore their armour saves, plus he will instant kill eldar, dark eladr, guard, tau, many daemons. The power fist would do the same only instant killing most things and threatening things like vehicles and monsterous creatures more. Either way he's get the same number of attacks, weather or hot he has a bolt pistol, bolter, or strom shield.
Personally I'd go with a relic blade and bolt pistol, besides an indep character with a powerfist is begging to get hit, (in combat you can direct attacks at the captain or squad) so he might die before he gets to attack.

Oh wow, thanks for the detailed responses (sure beats the GO READ THE RULEZ spam I got on Yahoo Answers...).
I'll go with the Relic Blade; can I just convert my bog standard power sword? How should I go about this?
A Relic blade is definitely the way to go for a Captain. This is not to say a powerfist or thunderhammer are bad, but with his high initiative the Relic blade is definitely a plus. The only thing I'd add would be to either add a combi-melta instead of a bolt pistol, since you don't get the extra attack with a two-handed weapon, or a Storm shield for some added survivability.

Give him the Relic Blade, a Stormshield, artificer armor, and a jump pack. it's a good build. Strength 6 with a 2+ armor save, and a 3+ invulnerable able to be where you need him
I serve my master and do as he wants. He wants the badlands, thus they will be his.

Personally I'm a dual lightning claw man but since you only reall offer two choices I'd go with the relic blade.
He can fire his pistol and then assault with it, he just cant use both in combat. As he can put it in a holster on his hip and then grab the haft of the blade with the now free hand (confusing explanation but its in the SM FAQ) Storm shield is just nice, as it gives him a 3+ invuln instead of the 4+ one the Iron halo gives.
NEVER give your commander a powerfist!!!!!!!! The sgt's in the squad he joins should have em to cover his lack of strength. Unless its Calgone of course, but he's special, and rides the short bus.
You dont have to "Convert" the relic blade just use a powersword as it. There is no proper Relic blade weapon as far as i am aware. Thats what i would do. If you still wanted to convert it, you could probaly make the powersword longer or make the Hilt of the blade look a bit more "Relic-y"
well i got 2 lay outs for a relic blade. the one is just extend the handle of a power sword to get a 2 handed style sword. the other i did what is called abbreviated pole arm with a glaive layout. abbreviated pole arm is a standard pole arm like a pole axe or a glaive and is shortened. so more or less this set up is a 5 to 6 ft long glaive instead of a 10 to 15 ft long glaive.
