Is the master of the forge worth taking as a character or is just using a techmarine better. Also is the conversion beamer actualy worth it.
Most often, a MotF is fielded in an army consisting of up 6 Dreadnoughts due to his unique rule allowing this. He can then used with a Conversion beamer in the backfield for it's full range effect.
The MotF, or a standard techmarine, also has the Bolster defenses rule, which can be quite useful for himself or a squad hunkered down in cover.
More often than not I see most Techmarines on the table with a Thunderfire cannon.

Salamander project log
Take a MoTF on a bike with a Thunder Hammer, and you've got a model that throws 5 power-fist hits on the charge (2 from the harness, 3 from the hammer) with an 18inch assault range. Thats 165points of pure anti-vehicle/MC power.
On the other hand, give him a Conversion Beamer and Bike, and you've got a moving, shooting violation of humanity thanks to Relentless! =)
The MoTF is so very much more than a way to take 6 dreads my friend
