Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey all, pretty new to guard, played a couple of games against space wolves with my praetorians and have been doing well but now the guy I play is switching to a nurgle daemon army. I have an inquisitor + mystics so I may well take that to deal with deepstriking. The game is only going to be 750 points but I was wondering what people find works well against such tough enemies.
It apears that you and i have a similar problem (i´m facing death gurad next weekend).
Those nurgle dude are sickly hard to kill for IG. However i can share my experience battling the daemons with you.
I fought a 1250p daemon army last week which contained 2 great unclean ones and 3 daemonprinces backed up by a few horrors. I know it´s not exactly a nurgle list but the main tactics are about the same.
1 Spread out! cover as much of your deployment zone as possible thus preventing them from deepstriking to close due to fear of misshaps.
2 One at a time! Concentrate all the fire you can bear against the closest target, if they can´t charge you next turn they pose no threat right now.
3 Tarpit them! Use nurgle´s own tactics against them. A 20 man guard squad led by a commissar or a penal legion squad should keep his Monsters ocupied for a long long time and sentinels can ocupate the plague bearers. And since you probably have more troops than your opponent you will still be able to take objectives while you opponents troops are busy fighting your decoys.
4 Demolishers, devil dogs, executioners and plasma cannon sentinels are good againts daemons. Blasts that ignore FNP kill swathes of plaguebearers. Especialy in the first turn when they are cloosely packed together after deepstriking.
Hope that helps.
Get mounted. get all your troops mounted in chimeras or being tanks. Plaguebearers can hardly do any damage to vehicles, and rest of the army being HQ and Heavy Support that pose real threats can be easily taken down, especially when you make melta/plasma drive-by pwnage. Pie-plates also help. You could also get Inquisitor in Elites section with two mystics... lern what they can do. You can have even two, one from Daemonhunters, another from Witch Hunters, each acompanied by two mystics is only 32 points that will bring CARNAGE to Daemons... especially if you've got plasma Executonier.
Take everything in Chimeras. Scoot around the battlefield and learn to focus fire the crap out of their daemons. Trust me, it is nearly impossible for a footslogging army to successfully beat a fully mech army because their effectiveness in assault is really taken away. Oh and take plasma. Lots and lots of plasma.
If it's an objective mission you are playing, aim for their scoring troops (which wont be so plentiful in a 750pt list).
Witch Hunters Inquisitors can't take Mystics. They get Penitents and Chirugeons instead.
That said, mount up. Problem with an Inquisitor though is that all his transport options are way overpriced, with the exception of a Land Raider (which has its own issues), and if he takes mystics he isn't an Independent Character. Plasma Guns and Demolishers will serve you well.
"The sergeant major asked me what my job is. I told him it's to do what I am told. He gave me a medal. I like the Imperial Guard."
"Innocentia Probat Nihil"
The only real threat to armour they could have is a soulgrinder, right? Should I invest in some meltaguns for that? I don't have any at the moment as I need to find a way to work them into the army's theme.
Chimeras+Melta Gun=Chimelta Chimeltax3=wins
Veterans or Command Squad with nothing but meltaguns is our best weapon, can take out any vehicle and because of the str 8 it instant kills. Some people like plasma but I like melta but yes invest in some melta guns.(buy the meltaguns for spacemarines and make conversions cheapest route same for plasma guns)
Flamers work well against daemons.
Against daemon plasma beats meltas. Since all daemons are imune to instant death extra shots are better than extra strenght. Plasma is also far more effective against plague bearers and mc. I had a veteran squad with 3*plasma in a chimera they single handedly won med the game. The soulgrinder is´nt to hard to kill use a few lascannons or deepstriking meltatroopers.
Yes, I must agree plasma seems to be the best choice for daemons, however in a tourny environment where mech is king meltas are better.
