The new Valkyrie is an excellent unit, fast able to get troops to objectives fast and bomb an enemy unit in the process.
My Guard army relied on the drop troops doctrine to get to objectives and with the new codex I’m now grounded and need some transports, indeed I would take one or two Valkyries, however it’s hard to tie them in with my guard’s unusual theme. But I’m having trouble coming up with a reason to just use Chimeras instead of Valkyries so I ask you…
What and are there any advantages in taking Chimeras instead of Valkyries?
(besides being able to take two transports instead of 1)
1: You can fire out of a Chimera for a start, thats probably the most important one in my eyes.
2: You can give orders out of the Chimera. which i know is fairly Meh, but still can be useful.
3: Have you tried to hide a Valk behind cover recently? Not gonna happen it's a "i'm big shoot me!!" model.
4: And yeah they're dirt cheap so you can spam them.
For fluff, say that your troops fitted Chimeras with grav-chutes (easy conversion if you just take them from a devilfish) to drop Chimeras loaded with troops, that way the army remains mobile after initial insertion.
Yeah, Chimeras are easier to safely use for moving troops around than Valkyries, you'll just have to find another form of mobile weapons platform...Oh wait, Chimera moving a heavy weapon squad. Can they fire from inside the tank, if so how many?
Asking for suggestions without knowing what you're planning on doing is like asking a blind man what color shirt matches your eyes.
Heavy Weapon Teams count as a single model for shooting purposes so an entire squad could fire out the top hatch if the chimera remained stationary.
At least I think so.
You could also look at it economically: 2 Chimeras = $60 1 Valkyrie ~ $60
Also if it gets shaken/stunned, they can disembark and fire. disembarking doesn't count as moving unless the tank allready moved in the same turn, and shaken/stunned only applies to them while they're in the tank.
And as for why to use Chimera's -
A: Cheaper(Pointwise and moneywise),
B: less of a "SHOOT ME NOW" target to your opponent. Valks/Vens might as well come with pre-painted target circles on their hulls.

Actually, rules specifically say that disembarking counts as moving, so you could not fire heavy weapons. Look under vehicles: disembarking passengers as my rulebook is currently in my trunk, 3 stories down...
