How many do you take of each for your heavy support choices and which is a better choice against SM/Necrons?

2 exorcists, no penitent engines. It depends on what the enemy army is fielding. Against necrons I try not to take any vehicles as potentially every model in their army can destroy it. And penitent engines are open topped so they will get destroyed easier. Against space marines I'd say go with exorcists.
Go for Exorcists with their ordance blast Ap1 will kill all Necron and Sm troops.
It is not ordnance.
Personally my Heavy Support choices are the same for the last 2/3 months:
(6) Retributor Squad w/ 4 heavy bolters
IMO Penitent engines are very feeble as they don't really have the stats to stay on the table for very long and you lose control of them as soon as you place them on the battlefield.

How about for an army that mostly goes against Space Marines(especially black templar/blood angels)? I was thinking 3 exorcists. Also, when you transport your retributor squad by immolator are they allowed to fire heavy weapons when they leave the vehicle?

I enjoy the dire image of the penitent engine against any foe so long as you can get it within position. It works out less in points cost too but the Exorcist I find to be the most reliable, but the Penitent’s battle frenzy can work out a heap more damage. However I rate the Exorcist more essential than the penitent engine. The fact that the penitent is rather awkward to get it in place at the correct moment is very questionable while the Exorcist works out as one of the more better performing heavy support units.
Penitent engines can be insane IF you get them into CC. The problem is that with an open topped vehicle with low armor, getting them there will be a problem. Especially against necrons.
I personally like the excorcist a great deal, and if they weren't 50 bucks a pop, then I would already have two of them.
How do you "get it into place" if you have no control over where it moves?
Oh, and Hourglass, it's cheaper to convert your own if you can't afford the Exorcist. Or use a whirlwind.
Although I have neither the exorcist nor a penitent engine, I prefer the exorcist. If you find a good position for it, it can fire anywhere on the battlefield without getting hit itself.
Penitent engines have the nasty habit of getting out of control. And I hate losing control. Because they can't save themselves anymore, and run into death with eyes wide open.
Thet plus they are open topped. And if I need a close combat thing, I'll call for my seraphims and my canoness; they demolish almost anything...
