I have some IG I have been using as inducted troops in my DH army. I have decided to have a go at guard and see how I like them as a general. My style is (always adapting to the current stiuation) generally aggressive and in your face. Here is what i have now. I am not adverse to buying a few more items, I just want a really competitive 1500 point list that I can play aggressively.
7 Ogryn (1 bon 'ead)
4 cadian meltas
4 cadian plasma
2 cadian flamers
2 cadian grenade launchers
2 heavy weapons teams (in box)
2 boxes of cadian troops
1 cadian command squad (in box)
1 LR Demolisher
Although I don't see it in a lot of lists here, Yarrick and 5 ogryn in a chimera have proven to be a wicked combination in our local metagame. Thoughts, advice, and strategies?
I can't comment on Ogryns because I have never used them, but it looks like you're guys are set up to be Veterans with all the Meltas, Plasmas, and Transports that you have. You also say you want to be aggressive, and Veterans combined with transports are a great way to do that. Demolitions are a fantastic doctrine for mobile Veterans.
One thing that is going to be key for you is shoot down as much anti-vehicle as you can for the first couple turns. If you can do that you can really control the movement and shooting phase as nothing will be able to shoot down the valks/vendettas, and you can control a lot easier where you want them to be.
If youre gonna make the switch to Guard, get used to taking your casualties away in droves, bring a broom or somehing, usually works for me . Anyway, if youre switching form Daemonhunters, and want an aggressive army, id suggest melta vets in chimeras, and leman russes. Also, since youve got them already, try like 2 small allied PAGK squads with your wierd DH flamer things in valks or vendettas. Have an astropath (you can make a pretty decent all-around regimental advisor guy out of the vehicle officer guy from the vehicle accessory sprue, and like some binoculars and a vox caster, save 15 bucks on the blister pack) in your company command squad and outflank them, if thats not aggressive, i dont know what is. Another tihng that will work well with your new guard from the DH will be an inquisitor with mystics, because we have quite alot of firepower for them to call down on those pesky deepstrikers . Maybe have an infantry platoon to hang back with hvy wpns to hold a home objective. Oh, and LEMAN RUSSES!!! regular battle tanks, demolishers, executioners, vanquishers with pask, pick your poison.
The thing to keep in mind about the guard that you might find strange (maybe not, i dont know too much about DH, just the parts that work well with my IG ) is that cheap is good. Quantity over quality is almost always the best way to go. Its pretty easy to double, even triple a company command squads cost with upgrades, especially the ones that up their survivability, like carapace armour or camo cloaks. But hey, when you can just take another CCS for those points, why not? The exception to this rule is in weapons, every single dude who can carry a special or heavy weapon should do so, with a few exceptions, but i digress...
Anyway, good luck in the trenches out there, and welcome to the Guard!
I've yet to really use Ogryns either because I only own 3 and that is far too few to field, plus the assaulty army I usually face is Tyranids would would eat them to death more than likely.
Good to know, I actually don't own any of them, I just assumed it was the same bits as the normal box but on a different sprue. Still, if these are gaming minis and you don't care about making them look awesome but just decent on the battlefield they would still probably work out OK.
Yeah if you want to play agressively then you should definately ally some grey knights into your force. Also straken might be a good addition. Furious charging, counter attacking grey knights and ogryns are nothing to laugh at.
Get 2-4 vet squads and 1-3 grey knight squads, making sure to have at lesst 5 troops choices (the guard will die very easily).
