Just a quick question, and I know its individual preference but some ideas would be nice. What colour would work well painting on IG bases?
My paint scheme is very similar to the standard cadian one, green armor with tan-ish pants. Not the exact same shades though. So Im wondering what would colour would be best to paint them. Im more concered about it matching the models rather than the terrain they will be on. Im thinking either some kind of green or brown.
Also I do have some of that little fake grass and rock I might eventually try out gluing on but for now it will probably just end up being a pained base all one simple colour... unless maybe I get the idea that a multicoloured base would work better for some reason.
I tend to paint them in somewhat contrasting colours. For example, my Necrons are Bone coloured so I have them on very dark, grey rubble bases. It makes the models stand out a lot. However, for Imperial Guard, I appreciate the point is to not stand out. So if you're using a variant of the Cadian scheme, light coloured dirt/sand (Khaki coloured), mud and a few spatters of grass would work well I think.
If you're only going to paint over the base once with one colour... well, that's pretty boring. A good basing scheme really helps 'make' the model and theme, in my opinion.
I personally think guard look great on city rubble bases. So thats some slate chips for £2 from a railway shop, pva glue them on and spray black when you spray them, overbrush codex gray and drybrush fortress gray. Easy and effective and you can go to town on larger bases whilst still keeping in theme.

Sprinkling a bit of rubble on there really is worth the effort. The improvement in how your models look will be immediately obvious. For 'muddy' or just dirt I really like this stuff:
Vallejo Pumice Stone Texture
Paint with (extremely watery so it runs and fills in the texture) Charadon Granite, Drybrush heavily with Calthan Brown, drybrush lightly with Dheneb Stone. Instant soil. example: (with some rocks added)
