I'm new to Imperial Guard in Warhammer 40k and I was wondering if anyone can tell me what i need to create a decent size army. I am looking to create an army between 500 and 1000pts. My main opponent will be Space Marines. I already have a codex, a heavyweapons team, and a squad of Cadian Shock Troopers. Thanks

2 battleforces should get you off to a good start at a reasonable cost. Other than that what type of army do you want? What units do you like? What do your marine playing friends have?
The more information you give out the better your replies will be.
Edit: Lestat's thread
has a ton of useful advice, although the contents of the battleforce have changed (CCS and sentinel repaced a russ) most of his advice is still useful.
The Emperor Protects
IG Best Gen 1st overall of 10 DE 4th overall of 6
Eldar 3rd Overall/Best General of 26--2nd Overall/Best General of 7--1st Overall/Best General of 11
Right now he has a space marine captain, 10 tactical space marines, 5 space marine terminators, a space marine drednought, and 5 sternguard veterns. I do not know what type of army I want. We might try planetstrike.
If you're going to be playing marines often standard Leman Russ Battle Tanks can't steer you wrong. S8 AP3 large blasts will rip apart marine units and are strong enough to destroy all but the heartiest of vehicles.
Missile Launchers are good for the same reason. Storm Troopers offer you lots of short-ranged AP3 shots. I could keep going on but those are some basic suggestions.
For a new player, I'd recommend building slowly and trying to divide your list evenly between infantry and vehicles until you really find what you like. A CCS, a PCS, a few standard squad boxes, a heavy weapons box, and a couple of vehicles (I'd probably recommend getting a Chimera and Leman Russ to start) would probably be a decent base to go from. Don't hesitate to proxy (or use something to represent another type of unit) to test out things before you buy them too. Your buddies should be willing to let you do this while you build your forces as long as you return the favor
Ok thanks for the help, I think I'm going to go with a hybrid army. What should I do to takeout his sternguard guys?
1.) Leman Russ battle tank: S8 AP3 Ordnance Blast will make most MEQ units cry when hit.
2.) Basilisk artillery battery: S9 AP3 Ordnance Barrage will make him cry even more, but not as durable.
3.) Missile Launchers: Relatively cheap and can double to take out MEQ or medium armor.
4.) Stormtroopers: Sure you need a 5+ to wound, but he ain't getting saves from any of those wounds. 10 Hotshots rapid firing get 20 shots, ~13 hits, which is ~4 wounds which he gets no saves against due to AP3. That alone will force a Morale check on the first volley. You can deepstrike right next to him so he can't really hide, etc. Probably not your BEST option, but a FUN one
Ok so I tried to make an army list and heres what I have... please comment.

You....... Have an old codex. Those points values are all off. Check with your local game store and look at the new codex.
I just checked, I guess you are right, I do have an old codex. This one was made in 2003, thanks for telling me.
Ok I now have a copy of the new codex. Also, Tau and Eldar are the two new armies that I will be facing. I also bought a command squad.
