I can move 12" and shoot both heavy bolters, if i have 2 equiped right? Or have i been always doing this wrong....
No. If you move 6" or less you can shoot them both. If you move 12" you can shoot one weapon of any strength and one weapon of strength 4 or less.
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
The reference sheet for 5E says "plus all defense weapons" for cruising speed, so you can shoot as much 4- weapons as you like.
I thought 12" was combat speed for a land speeder. doh..
Because the Land Speeder is a fast skimmer, it plays by slightly different rules.
1.) If it moves at Combat speed (up to 6"), it can fire all of it's weapons.
2.) If it moves at cruising speed (6" up to 12"), it can fire one weapon plus it's defensive weapons (including typhoon missile launchers firing frag missiles.
3.) Fast vehicles moving flat out (12" up to 24") may not fire any weapons.
4.) Fast Skimmers can move 24" for flat out speed.
Therefore, two heavy bolters, while effective at fighting hordes, is not as effective a mobile firebase as heavy bolter + typhoon missile launcher. You can move up to 12" and dump 3 heavy bolter rounds and two frag missiles into a horde, and if you have 3 land speeders, you can dump 9 heavy bolter rounds and six frag missiles. Land speeders make excellent mobile firebases, and with the typhoon also being capable of firing krak missiles (two at a time!) they can also jump over to anti-tank fairly well.
Land Speeder Weapon Load-outs:
Heavy Bolter - The standard weapon on a landspeeder, makes this light vehicle decent at providing deep strike capable anti-light infantry. Overall, this loadout is only good if you are trying to fit in fifty points and have nowhere else to dump it.
Heavy Flamer - The only problem with the heavy flamer is that the Land Speeder has a really terrible armor value. Anybody with a Strength 4 or higher weapon will destroy your vehicle next turn. See double heavy flamer below.
Multi-Melta - The tank hunting beast rears it's head. For only sixty points you get a deepstriking anti-tank machine, capable of striking from 24" for melta goodness, and 36" for just a strength 8 hit. It is a beautifully elegant load-out, but as soon as your opponent realizes what it is for, it will be shot down. So make sure to use it in tandem with something else.
As always, when equipping a squad or vehicle, it is better to make something amazing at doing one thing than mediocre at a lot of different things. To that end, I will only go into 'pure' weapon loadouts.
Typhoon Missile Launcher & Heavy Bolter - This is the true anti-infantry mobile firebase. Capable of delivering heavy bolter rounds and two fragmentation missiles while moving 12" a turn is truly delicious. As a side note, two krak missiles a turn has a decent chance of cracking armor.
Double Heavy Flamer - This is a gamble. granted you can move up to 6" to drop two heavy flamer templates, but when the land speeder is as mobile as it is, it makes more sense, in my opinion, to equip for longer ranged combat. Be aware that taking Vulkan makes these heavy flamers twin-linked.
Double Multi-Melta - Remember the tank hunting beast from above? This is the mythical version of that beast that has two heads instead of one. It is also twice as deadly. Granted, it might be overkill, but for an additional twenty points, you get to retain tank killing power after taking a weapon destroyed result, and it gives you a second chance to melt particularly tough armor. Vulkan also makes these twin-linked, thereby all but confirming a kill.
Assault Cannon - Yes, the Assault cannon is a beasty weapon. But look at what you get: A weapon that is less effective against mobs of low-armour enemies than the typhoon, a weapon that is less effective against armor than the typhoon, and a weapon that cannot move and fire as well as the typhoon. All in all, it is a semi-static (static when discussing mobile weapon platforms) weapon whose rending ability only marginally improves it's ability to kill. In addition, the Typhoon is capable of raining instant death on Marine Equivalent Independent Characters. The Assault Cannon is not. Overall, I say the assault cannon is a good weapon, but it is outshined by the other weapon load-outs available on the great land speeder platform.
The Land Speeder has only armor 10. This means that the humble bolter can drop it to it's proverbial knees, given enough shots. In order to protect the land speeder, it is important to keep it out of firing lanes, and pick off weak units individually, where it's speed and firepower make it truly deadly.
The Land Speeder Storm
The Storm is a new variant of Land Speeder available to space marines, or rather, available to scouts. This light transport can carry a small squad (5) of scouts into a battlefield. Being open-topped, scouts can assault the turn they disembark. Thy can also fire. You'd be dumping either 3 heavy bolter rounds, 4 assault cannon bullets, a gout of heavy flamer, or a multi-melta into the squad, not counting the 5 bolt pistols. Then, when they assault, the enemy has their leadership reduced by 2. Overall, it is a great hard hitting unit for fighting other troops and taking objectives.
Also, the Land Speeder storm is open-topped, allowing it's passengers to fire on the move. granted, they count as moving, but don't underestimate 5 bolters and an assault cannon blasting away at an enemy. Not to mention the combi-weapon the sergeant is using.
Overall, the Land Speeder and it's variants are a great weapon in the Space Marine Arsenal, fragile, yes, but ultimately destructive enough to more than make an impact on the battlefield.
Land Speeder Tornado
-Any Land Speeder with a second weapon underslung.
Land Speeder Typhoon
-Any Land Speeder with a pair of Typhoon style missile launchers on top.
Land Speeder Storm
-Scout Transport Land Speeder
I'm pretty sure that's everything there is to know about land speeders. Let me know if there are further questions.
