Just like the question says...how are effective are they with a sergeant and nine marines with bolters? GW boned me by not giving me a missile launcher or flamer in a tac squad box.
You could use some of the extra decorations, paint them a bit differently to your Tacs, and use them as Sternguard
well, i kind wanted to keep them a tac squad...i could just go buy the bitz at the GW store, but...ugh
That might be the combat squads from your battleforce sets sir. They are five plain tacticals each. Keep them as is for now, so you can use them to beef out devastator squads when you get to them. The devastator set comes with lots of heavy weapons above whats needed, and these will easily fit on any "combat squad" tacticals not yet assembled. As for the original query, the tactical squad are more useful with the heavy and special weapons, and lots of the options dont cost anything. It increases your options.
Jager bombs. Very efficient at wiping out friend or foe.
tac squads with just bolters are just about useless. you need at least a heavy weapon. rule of thumb flamer and missile launcher. i would use a few as sternguard and then use the rest as fill in for other squads.

They still work vs nids, orks other teams with dreadful armour saves. I reckon its impossible to arm a space marine squad and say there useless. There suppose to be the backbone of any force for a reason!
It's a shame they didn't come with the extra weapons. The squad should be fine against most things outside of tanks and MC's when shooting. It's definitely worthwhile to take the extra weapons though since most are 'free' to the squad.

Since multi-melta, heavy-bolter or missile launcher is a "free" upgrade for a 10-man squad, I see no reason whatsoever not to take one.
Yes, if you move you can't shoot it, but you only looses 2 bolt shots then. In my opion the heavy weapon is usefull even in games it never was used. Especially if it is a multi-melta, the other player will thik twice before he move vechiles or dreads close by. This sort of "denying" og threatning areas can be quit handy.
