was just wondering the other day what the advantage of taking veterans over normal guardsmen besides their higher weapon skill???
1- They don't need a PCS to take therm and you only need one unit.
2- You can have up to 3 special weapons in a squad instead of just 1.

Doctrines are nice, too. Being able to charge a vehicle (or squadron!) with a squad of melta-bomb armed veterans is a thing of beauty.
Compared to a Normal Infantry squad? Well.......
1, Better BS
2, They can have 3 special weapons rather than just one, added with the better BS means they can be a nasty, nasty unit.
3, They're a single troop choice, so no bothering the PCS and multiple squads. This means you can reduce the amount of bodies in an army. If thats what you want to do......
4, They can have doctrines. Demolitions is awesome. Carapace is useful and so is forward sentries.
5, The addition of Harker and Bastonne gives you a few extra tricks up your sleeve. Harker with his infiltrate and stealth and Bastonne with his orders.
6, In a hoard army like guard the chance to spend some time on just 10 blokes and make them characterful is a nice break to an otherwise mass produced army.
All of the above added together means they're a very adaptable unit. Able to be tooled up to go tank hunting, to go MEQ hunting, to go M-Creature hunting, to infiltrate on an objective or to just sit at the back and provide some accurate fire.
thanks for all the help guys, its been a great help.
