OK, I bought three new dreadnoughts, and was thinking of hooking them up with TL Lascannons and Heavy Flamers...which would make them kind of half and half, but have been playing Nids a lot with my Imperial Guard, so I want to make sure I have something for anti-infantry...thoughts?
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
The assault cannon DCCW/heavy flamer is the best all round combination in the game IMHO and eats infantry. You can shoot 4 strength 6 shots then assault and most infantry in 40k cant do shit to a dreadnought in CC. Not to mention the heavy flamer aswell before you assault.
But a ironclad with 2 heavy flamers drop poding is the best by far, 2 templates and av13 plus more attacks on the charge.
But if you have normal dreads I would either assault cannon missile launcher or assalt cannon DDCW/heavy flamer.
And id never take a dread for tank hunting theres better units for the job for alot cheaper.
For pure infantry-killing I'd go for an Ironclad with two Heavy Flamers and Assault Launchers. A lot of squads get Krak Grenades as part of their standard wargear nowadays, and while a normal Dread ain't likely to walk away from 10 of those without sustaining at least a bit of damage the Ironclad is immune to them. They're also far better able to go toe-to-toe with MCs and are a helluva lot more difficult to kill in general.
My favourite Ironclad load-out is a Hurricane Bolter, Assault Launchers and two HK Missiles. This gives it a little bit of dakka so's deploying it by Drop Pod isn't strictly necessary, which means you get to put a nice AV13 Walker down at deployment to shield your other units and draw a bit of fire.
Being a new player, and being interested in getting a dread for this role, could I be enlightened as to which weapon is the assault launcher?
Am I correct to understand that such a configuration would do well against the likes of Ork's or nids?
The Ironclad Assault Launchers aren't actually a weapon, they're just an upgrade for the Ironclad Dreadnought that makes it count as having both assault and defensive grenades. See page 103 of the Space Marine Codex for the Ironclad Assault Launchers and page 36 of the main rulebook for the grenades.
The Hurricane Bolter loadout is excellent for taking down the likes of Orks, 'Nids, IG etc. In fact, it isn't much good for anything other than that.
I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think they're the two little things (I'm not sure how else to describe them) on top of the shoulders. Search Google Images and you should see what I'm talking about. And I don't mean the little rockets, they're the Hunter/Killer Missiles.
I could be wrong about that though.
Best (and cheapest) Dread for Anti-Infantry should be the Twin-Linked Heavy Flamer, DCCW with Flamer. Two templates, one with re-rolls to wound. All you need to do is deploy via drop-pod and turn up the heat. Easy.
Then it is the heavy flamer that is on the other arm correct?
I admit I am confused about this because the box of the Ironclad does not indicate including a heavy flamer. I may be mistaken. But If not, would I have to buy it separately?
And would a simple DCCW with flamer do the same job?
Again, pardon my most likely noob-ish questions.
