I am close to buying the start (750 points or so) of an Imperial Guard army. I like the look of the Vostroyan infantry models. Planning forward to a 2000 point army I had a few questions for those who have these guys or any other guard army made up of metal infantry.
With so few variations in the models, what do you use for veterans? What about veterans with carapace armor?
When you get to the point of 50+ infantry models, do you get tired of looking at the same ones over and over, given the lack of variety in the metals models?
There aren't any troopers with autocannons, melta guns, or shoguns in the Vostroyan range. The autocannon could be swapped out most likely. Has anyone had success converting the metal models to carry different special weapons? Do they look halfway decent after?
Were you forced out of your home by the overall expense of the army?
What I am going for is a guard army that is somewhat like an early WW II Russian rifle division. Maybe a few tanks or mounted squads to reinforce the unit, but primarily artillery and a large meat wave of troops. I'd look for my anti-vehicle fire to come from heavy weapons teams primarily. I also think the commissars make for great political officers, and the execution ability fits in well with the theme.
Anyway, advice from anyone who has attempted an army based on metal models would be appreciated.
One way to make a eltagun is to take a flamer and cut off the end nozzle and replace it with that from a meltagun.
Going mechanised can help combat the high costs of vostorian miniatures, and if you're going mech it's a good idea to use veteran squads.

Vostroyan models are certainly elaborate and well-armoured enought to all be used as carapace veterans if you so wished. Going all-vets would help keep costs down a bit too.
Thanks for the comments. I added up what it would cost for a large amount of metal foot troops and it made me cry a little bit. Mechanized or veterans (or both) sounds like a good option. I made a test list and posted it, trying to incorporate suggestions.
I may end up using Vostroyans as veterans and something else for the troops.
Perhaps you could give the stormtroopers a gs'd gasmask. Cut off the ammopack in the gun and have a wire running from the gun to a homemade backpack to simulate hellguns (none of this "hotshot lasguns" for zema).
Paint the metals on those models gold and your rank and file iron colored. Rock 'n Roll!
If you do buy cadians for the rank and file, make sure to make em more archaic: do some conversion work on the guns, give the sergeants fur hats and a curved sword etc...

Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.
