Bear with me, I am fairly new at the Guard, but have been playing a long time (since 2nd edition).
It doesn't seem to me that many people like the Leman Russ Punisher. With the current popularity of mechanized lists, I totally understand! It seems to me though, if you make use of 3 or 4 Vendettas and 2 punishers, you can absolutely wipe out squads with their transports.
I figure that cover saves are so prevalent that the lack of ap on the Punisher cannon isn't a big loss, and that the sheer volume of rounds will hopefully translate into a lot of saves to make. (certainly against eldar/guard/orks)
Am I insane?
To me, it just seems like a Punisher's job can be accomplished by using the standard (and cheaper) Leman Russ. With the rules on blast templates being what they are, you can still lay down an acceptable amount of hits on target, with the added bonus of being easier to wound and better AP value.
One thing that a Punisher is better than a Leman Russ at is downing Monstrous Creatures. Other than that, I can't really see what it does so much better that I would take a Punisher instead of a LRBT.
I admit though, it is hard to get around the sheer impressive number of shots that a Punisher puts out. In true IG fashion though, I would go all out if I decided to take one, and just take like 3... or 6. Then I would buy a whole bunch of custom dice from a certain Marvel comics character specifically for when I decided to shoot. If you're gonna go, you might as well go all out.

I can see punishers more as MC and other tough critter killers. Throw Pask on one and give it bolter sponson with bolter hull gun. 29 Str 5 shots at BS4 with Pask's bonus against MCs is deadly. I can see Carnifexes, Greater Demons, and Demon Princes dropping like flies to one or two punishers.
If you are worried about all the cover saves that are so prevalent in the current edition, go with an Eradicator. For anti-infantry I'd still rather be dropping templates.
Punishers are fail, Eradicators or Executioners are better at destroying infantry piling out of transports. Bane Wolves too.

Point taken, punisher looks nifty, fails in practice.
Is the bane wolf a better choice than a fully plasma'd out executioner for the points? (I suppose that is almost 2 bane wolves.)
I feel like 5 str 7 ap 2 templates really cant be beat for infantry destruction, but what the heck do I know!
That's true. The problem is, IG have so many options for killing infantry. From Executioners to massed lasgun fire, anything in the IG can either be spammed enough to take care of anything, or bought at cost. The Executioner would be an example of the latter. If you can find the points to sink into it, I don't think anyone would question why you did it.I feel like 5 str 7 ap 2 templates really cant be beat for infantry destruction, but what the heck do I know!

It could be done but would lose a lot of effectiveness against anything with power armour. Besides if they get kicked out of their transport they'd most likely be nice and bunched up...

here's the end all tank for IG(if it can get close enough to use its main gun that is)
the Demolisher is the king of all IG tanks, here are a few reasons
1. Its main gun can kill anything in the game(its the strongest weapon in the game)
2. it is fairly cheap compared to the other variants, not much more than a basic russ
3. rear armor 11 means you dont have to worry about those frag grenades, and meq dont get easy tank kills
4. it just got a new kit, come on!
5. It has been the tried and true IG tank for many editions now, you take care of it, and it will blow the crap out of anything within 24'
6. biggest threat to monoliths other than medusa or manticore(and unlike them it can mess up infantry on its way to the monolith)
Hellhounds are good tanks
