Does anyone know of an attempt to create an entire Chapter? Not creating a customer chapter - but actually collecting, assembling and painting a complete SM chapter? Adding fluff and back story as well.
Seems insane; but I put together a very q&d chapter list - and diverging from the Ultramarines list in the 'dex by creating armoured companies rather than having armour as additional troops, it looks like it's going to run to about 800 models-ish. Models alone will cost around £8,000+, then there's the paint, brushes etc etc. Probably turn into £10k once you buy everything and add in some fluffy scenery and so forth.
Time wise, with a very basic paint scheme, I'm thinking maybe 1,000 hours minimum.
Not sure I'll do this in one hit (couldn't afford it anyway - but all those boxes would be fun!) but by starting out with the Chapter list, I can buy and build as I grow the army organically.
Anyone else thought about this? Anyone else done it?
Am I totally mad?
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.

Well, more power to you if you can do it.
Honestly, I'd probably try to do an entire company with some support elements to start rather than an entire Chapter.

Hey the only time I've ever heard of someone doing this, it was the entire crimsoon fists chapter. They succeded but it was only half he strength of a regular chapter, but if you do this...
Ask me about the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White Bike!!!
Interesting idea. If you do decide to build an entire chapter, then you've spoken for your free time for the next several years! I don't come close to having a chapter force, but I do have 150+ marine infantry models of various sorts and I can say that if I multiplied that by 6 (for your 800) then I'd be buried in model parts.
Start a company at a time. It is more manageable. Work out some way to paint them to so you aren't doing 50 infantry models in a row, as that leads to insanity. In a few years when you're finished, post some pics. I'd love to see everything done along with the fluff part.
Instead of wasting 10,000 euros, send me 200 dollars, what with the exchange rate that's gotta be something like 100 euros. That should sufficiently waste your money for a time, and save you the incredible head ache, dent in social standing, and wasted time, of trying to to put together 800 models.
Although, if you or anyone else wants to send me money, feel free
Only time I've ever seen a Chapter in it's entirety is the front of the 3rd edition C: SM, where they had the Ultramarines Chapter... Try and track down a copy of that if you want to see the scale of the task.
Also, I happen to know GW threw out the entire Chapter when they re-did Warhammer World.. it's amazing what they get rid of.
Also, that same Codex had a comprehensive list of the strength of the Ultramarines Chapter, as well as how it was organised.

They made an entire chapter - then threw it out? That makes me feel a little sick...
The consensus seems to be I'm mad in a good way. Excellent. Think I'll do some more planning..
As for the paint job - I'm thinking black armour with various trim depending on Company & Squad. Simples and will look amazing massed..
I'll need to start a video blog / website in order to pay for it, btu that's nop
