ive always liked the death wing i mean termies for fast attack...
But my friend said they can be taken out really easily, what is peoples opinion on this as i havnt really played against a deathwing before.
Thankyou for your time.
Well, consider that while the entire army consists of Terminators, Dreadnoughts and Land Raiders, all three units cost an awful lot of points. In 1000 points, you'd by lucky to be able to field more than 3 squads. This means that more or less any army (bar Grey Knights) would easily be able to outnumber, outshoot and outmaneuver them. Yes, they're tough and yes they'll probably last long, but they're very hard to pull off competitively. Especially in games where it's necessary to sieze objectives (2/3 of the 5th edition missions).
Played "Deathwing" a year, now gone back to usual Marine Lists with Termi outload..
Deathwing is quite nice, even if harder to handle.
First, you have to buy Belial. He´s quite cheap with 130 points, most people take LC for Ini 5, I always took TH/SS because of the look.
Best thing you can do with Deathwing- take Belial, 5 Termis with Asscannon+ Chainfist and Apothecary. For the rest of the bugs, just buy Terminators. Dark Angel Dreads are quite expensive for what they do, unless you field Mortis Cybots with double missile launcher or double lascannon, leave them at home.
Remember, your Temis count as tacticals. Buy as many (shooty) Terminators as you can get, replace the sergeants SB and PW with Twin LC and go for the objectives. That´s pretty much the only way to win successfully. And that was what bored me, Termis are quite nice, but fielding Termis without anything else to have a chance to win annoyed me. Play say 10 games just with termis, and you get bored. If you buy anything else , you will get tabled most of the time, mainly because your numbers are few and the enemy will then shoot your 10 termis or 15, and then you already lost the game. He will shoot down squad by squad, because if he kills 2 of 3 you can only hold at least one objective, and that can be nullified by an enemy squad around the marker.
As well, Deathwing doesn´t have the 3+ Invul Save for stormshields usual marines get, nor have they the cyclone missile launcher bonus of 2 missiles.. Personylly, an upgrade that Deathwing is pretty in need of.
A few things that Deathwing lacks
- SS upgrade
- Cyclone upgrade
- 12 Models LR upgrade
Few things Deathwing would need to be halfway competive as well
- Termis deployed as Elite should have access to a second heavy weapon or
- Heavy weapons in Termisquads can be fired at a different target (like machine spirit from SM codex)
- Cybots counting as troops in terms of holding objectives
- Termis that deepstrike only scatter 1D6
That would make them a pretty fair army that still suffers from low numbers but is capable of holding their ground..
I've been playing pure DW lists for months now and I think they are rather competative. The thing is they are rather difficult to get used to and able to use well. It took a lot of games before I tuned into them and figured out how to use them well on a consistant basis.
But I wouldn't bother playing them below 1500 pts. That'st he list I started with was 1500, 3 units and 2 dreads worked out pretty well. At 1750 I have 5 termi units and 2 dreads, and it's an awesome list. 5 troop units with 2+/5+ is hard to take out. The only list I was virtually tabled by was an Eldar list that had two units of three walkers, each loaded with 2 starcannons (or what ever is the 2 shot AP2 gun). That many shots that needed 2s to wound me and made me roll my invuln save was darn impressive.
Otherwise they are very viable and competative, but take a lot of practice to use well.
Age is a state of mind, and since I have no mind, I don't age.

Pure deathwing is a very hard army to use. It may be competative, but needs to played perfectly.
On the other hand a half deathwing is a great army. I play this type of army for about a year now I have had great success with it. Also double and triple wings can be very good but I didn't try that myself.

A mate of mine uses Deathwing army quite alot at my local GW and has rarely lost a game. (note his main opponents are fellow marines with reasonably balanced lists).
So yes i think they can be a very good list. The only troubles you may have are with armies that significantly outnumber you, like Orcs, IG and Nids.
But best way to know is give them a few trial games and check how they go, even if you are subbing models as Termies in friendly games.
