My friends and I have just started back playing 40k, and plan to keep with it this time. And like a good guardsman I came back to the tried and true IG army, that still needs a lot of work to become 2500 point operational.
But anyways I was just wondering if any of you guys could give me your opinions on some of the tactics/ type of army I am thinking of employing in some of up coming games. Just for a little background, i play against two friends of mine and one plays Chaos and another plays Space Marines, but we are getting an independent retailer in our city soon so i will be playing other armies also.
But back on topic. I was thinking just in general games to first Have a bare bones command squad, except for a standard, vox, and master of ordnance. Then for a fire base have an infantry platoon with 2 infantry squads, and between 4-5 HWS squads with either lascannons or autocannons. Along with that i would also have 3 either colossus or basilisk to add to that firebase's fire.
Then for advancing have an infantry platoon with 5 infantry squads in it supported by 2-3 demolishers or other leman russ variant. And then for counter attack or last minute objective taking 2 chimelta vet squads. If you guys could just give me your opinions I would really appreciate it.
It depends on what kind of army you want to run really.
Your proposed list is a mix, a little of everything. It's not a bad idea, you just need to tune it properly. For a static firebase, a mob of guardsmen and autocannon HWS work wonderfully, as do Executioners, Eradicators, Collussi, Medusas, Vendettas, and PBS. Generally they will gun for light armor, infantry entrenched in cover, and make life for your forward elements easier (exception being the Medusa and Manticore, they can go after AV14 no problem). For a forward unit, Chimeltas, Demolishers, Hellhound variants, and maybe a mob of stubborn guardsmen work well. They are vulnerable to getting stuck in combat or melta'd since they work best at short range, so take multiples and use your static element to neutralize threats from afar.
I highly recommend throwing together some proxies and playing some test games, since you don't want to waste money buying a bunch of crap that you'll never get much use out of.

Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. I have 2 1500 point battles coming up this weekend i will try to see what tactic is most effective.
I played a 900 point game with my space marine about 2 weeks ago, and my results were quite good. The firebase seemed to be able to bring tremendous amounts of fire power on most of his units as i got him into chokepoints on the board.
But i only had a standard LRBT on the field due to the low number of points but it earned more than its share in points back killing 10 marines, a captain and a dreadnought, but i will really be able to see what tactics work in my next few games.
Against Space Marines and their Chaos counterparts, you'll want to make good use of the AP3 we have in the army: Leman Russes (Demolishers for Terminators), stormtroopers, the lot. For your heavy weapons teams, I'd go with Lascannons for the majority. Use them to take on enemy vehicles (making good use of Bring It Down) whie your tanks aim for their infantry squads. Make good use of combined squads: run them large, with a commissar, and don't be afraid to hand out power weapons to everybody and their dog.
