Daemonhunters are my first love, but their high price and lack of codex support makes them frustrating.
Alas, i am now a new guard player with the advent of the 5th ed codex. I've been experimenting with using allied PAGK (power armoured grey knights) as an elit-ish troop choice that act as a a bodyguard and assault deterrent for my infantry squads.
They ain't cheap, but they provide a good amount of medium range firepower, the shrouding protects them nicely at range, and they're a pretty good troops-choice assault unit. A unit of outflanking striking scorpions has already learned not to mess my infantry rear flank anymore with the grey knights there to counter-charge.
I know grey knight termies rule, no debate there. I'm curious, though, what other generals feel about inducting 2 squads of basic grey knights. Psy-cannons are, IMO overpriced, and unnecesary given the sheer amount of firepower that guard crank out.
Thoughts welcome and appreciated.
PAGK have worked out very well for me so far. In my last game they managed to wrack up a ton of kills on space marine tac squads and harass a sternguard squad to no end. I usually keep them vanilla in squads of 6-7 at 24" range to spam out stormbolter rounds and deter anything from trying to assault my tanks.
They are also very good at holding objectives in cover, especially with one incinerator just in case something decides to get close.
Yes, you can load them up in chimeras and vendettas, termies too as far as RAW go I believe (not accounting for 'ard boyz rules), but I prefer them on foot. As my space marine opponent stated, "You've got to much shit driving around with meltaguns for me to deal with them"
I've fielded terminators as well, but I usually do for the dual psycannons mostly because it just feels kind of.....wrong....to load them up in the guard transports when the same transports in the DH codex says NO.
Termies are less effective, you won't get them into close combat very easily, but the Str 6 36" is very nice. Managed to pop a few razorbacks and land speeders with them.
In general the GKs are very pricey, but they are a nice supporting unit and the opponent will have to decide whether to deal with them and shrouding/power armor or deal with platoons/chimeras and take the stormbolter abuse.
Ive used a squad of grey knight terminators to great effect with creed. Either outflanking them or holding them back in my lines depending on the situation.
