I am building my first army. I am a noob. Only played a test game to learn the basic rules. After diving over 40k lore for hours and hours I finally picked an army. I am building a Ravenwing \ Deathwing army or just Ravenwing, I'm not quite sure yet. I own Sammael, 2 Ravenwing Attack Squadron sets, Belial, Terminator Assult Squad, and a Land Raider Crusader.
Now the question is should I attach the Land Speeder to each Attack Squadron, or run a Ravenwing Support Squadron with 2 speeders. I saw a rule where if a unit is part of a squad you can pick who dies. Does that apply to the land speeder if its attached?
Thanks ahead of time for the feedback.
That is a good selection to start out on. What kind of points limit are you thinking of creating your force for? 1500? do you have the Dark Angels codex yet? and have you worked out how many points you have so far? When you work out how many points you have left it makes it easier to decide what else to throw into your force.
Also if you are not sure on what would work best, just try them out/playtest them and see what is missing from your force. Owning the rule book will help there too if you don't have it already.
You cannot attach a Land Speeder to a Bike Attack Squadron. In fact, you cannot join vehicle units with any other unit (unless said vehicle unit comes as a squadron). For example, you couldn't join a Dreadnought with some Terminators or a Predator tank with a Tactical Squad.
Your choices are therefore thus:
- Have two Land Speeders on their own, as seperate units. This takes up 2 Fast Attack choices.
- Have both Land Speeders together as one squadron. This takes up 1 Fast Attack choice.
My recommendation is to do the first. Why? It makes them far more flexible. If your Speeders are squadroned, this means they always have to move together and fire at the same unit. If one of your Speeders manages to wipe a unit out, the other will no longer be able to shoot at anything.
Yes, it's true that you can allocate damage in a unit. So you can pick which Land Speeder should be damaged if the squadrons gets shot. But this means that the enemy only needs to shoot at one unit to disable both your Land Speeders. By making him split is fire with 2 individual ones, your are overall less likely to take damage.
Squadrons limit your tactical options and choices. Since you only have 2 Land Speeders, you may as well use both Fast Attack slots. You can always move them around near each other if you want to, but give yourself the option to split them up if you feel like it. The only time you should squadron vehicles is if you have more than available slots. So if you had 4 Land Speeders, you would take 1 Squadron of two and 2 individual ones.
As for your army, you have a great core. Your next choice should probably be another Terminator Squad. This would give you 4 scoring Troops choices. Don't forget that each Ravenwing bike has a Teleport homer and Deathwing Terminators have the Deathwing Assault rule, a great combination.
Ravenwing Attack Squadrons can buy a Speeder. It never joins the unit, but it's a Troops pick and since Codex > rulebook yoy get a scoring Speeder
DW/RW is a tricky build since you have so few models. You'll want to get as many infantry on the board as possible and don't bother Deep Striking since it's too easy to punish.
Something like this might work.
DW squad-assault cannon, apothecary
3x DW squad-assault cannon
RAS-6, 2 meltas, Attack Bike, Apothecary
RAS-6, 2 meltas, Attack Bike
That ends up around 2000 points, see how small? Your advantages are mobile firepower and Apothecaries, but not combat so avoid that if at all possible. Termies can hold their own, but dedicated assault units will crush them.
I'd prefer a more flexible build with units added to cover the weaknesses of Terminators. Dakka Predators to help knock out transports from afar, Speeders and Dreads with multi-meltas to help against armor, and the like.

Thanks for the feed back. I got dragged into a game of Armageddon, which was a blast. I ran my army like this but it was missing a lot it felt like.
Sammael (Jet Bike)
DW Term (x3TH/x3LC,Banner)
RWAS (x2PG, +3 Bikes, AB w/MM, LS w/MM, PW & MB on sergent, Banner)
RWAS (x2PG, +3 Bikes, AB w/HB, LS w/HB, PW & MB on sergent)
Land Raider Crusader (MM, TL-AC, Storm Bolters, Extra Armor)
So I started with one RWAS on the field and the termies in the crusader. I killed waves upon waves of orks. But when the armor showed up, my speeder with the melta was immobilized and melta destroyed. By the end of this huge game I lost almost everything but my termies. Belial charging around the battle field and getting 6 attacks was sweet thoe. I need more low AP guns it seemed. Mabie change the PG for Meltas on the bikers. I'm not sure I'm still new so I don't know whats out there. I hope they redo the codex for DA because their machine spirit is shitty. I guess they use the old one or something. I didn't use Apothecaries because I didn't have the bits to show it. After the fact the people I was playing with said they would have been fine with it. I fielded the AB and LS sperate from the RWAS so they could mobe independently which was a very good idea. Kept my army alive longer.
