I've come back to space marines after toying around with necrons and I'm trying out things I've never used extensively in the past. However, when it comes to the HQ section I always find myself choosing librarian over and over again. I just think they are most solid HQ choice in a space marine army for their price ignoring some of the special characters. I want to try forcing myself to use a captain and I was wondering, is the command squad worth it, and if it is, how would you equip them and then how would you transport them?
I have to say i really like the idea of librarians, especially terminators librarians: Genetically enhanced super soldiers wearing the most technologically advanced armor in the known universe battling incomprehensible threats from the deep reaches of space with psychic powers ? I'll take 2!
However, I've recently decided to keep my librarian for 2nd HQ and for higher point games. they're a good choice, but i think you're better off with something else.
If you're going for a captain, I'd look up the special characters first. They too, have access to command squads (Some of them anyways) and add a nifty effect on your army. Command squads are best used, in my opinion, to balance out the rest of your force; If you lack Anti-tank, put them in a razor back or put them on bike with meltas. Need more close combat effectiveness? A few storm shield and relic blade will do the trick. Playing a lot of swarms ? Flamer time! Overall they have great stats, but are few in numbers, so a transport of some kind would be great, the banner and champion are no brainers in my opinion.
So in short:
-Are they worth it? Yes
-What transport do i use? Razor backs
-How do i equip them? Use specific gear, but don't overload them.

4 meltaguns in a drop pod is worth it. Remember that the captain doesn't have to be with the squad aty all; they aren't a retuine.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply, i really appreciate it. Yeah, librarians are one of my favorite choices out of any armies, not only do they look cool ( ecspecially the terminator one) but i think they are my favorite choice in lower pt games. Ill give the command squad a try in a razorback than, it seems like it could be pretty good.
How would a commnad squad in a Land Raider Crusader go? Worth it? I have a Razorback with twin Las and a LRC atm. I would prefer to keep the twin Las not moving as much but would want my command squad and Captain to be in the action fast, so is the LRC a good choice?
Move forward and stay quiet brothers.

I (almost) never used command squads in 4th edition. But this has changed.
The special characters are often really good choices for your lists. But when I refrain from choosing one it's usually because I use my biker Captain. On bikes, the command squad being only few models doesn't matter much. It's not over-priced either: of course it's more expensive than a bike squad as such, but you get more attacks, more options and Feel No Pain, keeping your squad alive quite some time (remember the toughness-boost from the bikes).
It's hard to answer the question whether command squads are worth it on an overall basis. But they sure can be. I tend to view them as a veteran squad with Feel No Pain (which is exactly what they are of course). I probably wouldn't take a Captain just for the chance of taking a command squad, but the Captain isn't as bad a choice anymore as it was back in 4th.
As for how I equip them: put them on bikes. If that suits the rest of your army.
Command Squads are great, especially as I usually take a Captain anyway (depending on points I usually take a Captain or Chaplain, with a Terminator Libby as 2nd if it's a high point game). I fully agree with Seismic though in that the special captains are a lot more effective than regular Captains, assuming they have the weapons you'd want anyway.
