Never (or very rarely)
I don't usually take ratlings, however I took two squads (5 man and 4 man) into my latest battle and I will definately be taking them again. Very handy fire support for my infantry and helped take down the last few members of several enemy squads. They would have been more effective if the enemy was vulnerable to pinning...
Maybe they over-achieved, what do you think? Do you take ratlings? Why/Why not?
Avatar of the Avatar, pure genius!
I can't stand the abhumans - either the models or fluff, so i never take them. I mean, SPACE HOBBITS? I would probably use them if they had better models/fluff as they seem like they could be fun and useful in battle.
i dont really like the new rattling models which is why i only field five, the amount of old ones i have.
i love infiltating into some sort of cover and just sitting there for the whole game. rattlings usually get overlooked and are not targeted much also with Stealth special rule they are hard to kill once in cover. i had a rattling squad win me a 15000 point apocalypse game by infiltrating and contesting an objective, after the rest of his squad had been sucked into a vortex grenade.
one of my friends made the huge error of ignoring my rattlings, and as his 5 Chaos Bikes and Chaos Lord rode across the table they were gunned down before they even got into combat. needless to say the friend took them out asap next game.
I had a squad of 10, they didn't really impress me; I sold half of them to my brother and now have five left, partially painted and never used. Ever since ratlings lost their getting pinned rule they aren't worth taking. Sure they'll get a 3+ cover save but if a quarterof the unit dies they're gone. Even if they don't run off the table they won't easily regroup, GBitF also needs a leadership test. Then if they do regroup they're left out of cover and unable to fire their heavy weapons.

I take my ratlings sometimes. Its really based on what im fighting. If I'm fighting orks, eldar, or nids. Then yes. If I know I'm fight space marines, chaos space marines, or tau then most of the time no. I have found in the past they work pretty good. I run a squad of 7 myself.
I am an Indestructible master of War.
I very rarely even consider ratlings, because almost all of my opponents are Fearless or immune to Pinning and the like. I probably should reconsider them with the new rending rules, and I'd usually look at them with a COD game where I knew I might get some rooftop positioning.
Something i used in the past........ many many years ago.
Don't bother with them anymore. The Rules for Sniper rifles aren't brilliant. Most of my lists tend to go with Mechanised forces so they don't really fit in.
They're a points filler. But for 30pts for a unit? You can buy alot with 30pts in a Guard list thats better than 3 Ratlings.
