Hellhound (or variant)
Mech Infantry with Flamers
Foot Infantry (GL, ML, etc)
I've been following the "Favorite Russ Variant" thread, but I saw very little love for the Eradicator. So, it got me to thinking: What do you take for horde killing in your all-comers lists?
For me, those hordes consist of about 90+ shoota boyz in cover and Lootas that need to be removed from the opponents deployment zone and objectives. But, the same question could be asked of IG Infantry armies or close combat hordes such as Nids and slogging Boyz (slighty different strategy since they like to come to you).
Do you like the Hellhound? The Eradicator only costs about 30 points more, has longer range, and AV14. That extra range should also help keep it away from the footsloggers with Klaws longer. It also doesn't suck up a Fast Attack slot that could be used for Vendettas.
Special Weapons squads with Flamers in Vendettas could be a nice option as well, or a PCS with flamers in a Chimera. Maybe even grenade launchers for you non-mech armies.
I'd love to hear your strategies and thoughts...
Templates. Lots and lots of Templates. Bassies, Flamers, Mortars, Grenade Launchers, Missile Launchers, MoO. You name it, and if it has a Template I use it. But, that's just how I roll. I used the same things against MEQ's and even MC's... to less than spectatular results...
112th Cadian Rifles - Since January 2009
MY Record - Overall 4/5/5
The standard Hellhound. It is pure, beautiful death to anything non-MEQ. Lasguns also do a good job of hordes as well, as hordes tend not to have much in the way of armor.
Here's the thing about the Eradicator: hordes don't care about AV14. IG have the armor to counter it and Orks/Tyranids are so fast that they'll reach your back armor with a couple dozen attacks almost immediately. The Hellhound's rear armor is no better but notice it's a fast vehicle--enemies need 6's to hit while it merrily drives around killing a swath of models every turn. That speed plus the natural tendency of hordes to bum rush their enemy completely negates the range issue. And Hellhounds don't scatter--that Inferno Cannon never disappoints. Near-immunity to CC and a dead-accurate template make the Hound a better killing machine than the Eradicator.

Manticore rocket launchers and MoO on big games, there is so many targets that dispersion is not so bad. A squadron of Griffons in smaller games, the reroll allow more impacts and hordes dont need much S and AP anyway. Flamers are fantastic, is just that I love the new artillery

Two simple words, Death Strike. Anyhting in the back field is ... gone. Ive killed like 40 orks at a time with that. And Im talking lootas and Meks, what not. Its just a fun and silly unit.
If you want to kill hoards there really is only one tank I'd be taking.
It's cheaper than the Hell hound by lots. It doesn't need to get dangerously close to the enemy. So will live longer.
It's half the Price and more than the Death Strike and the Eradicator.
It's Accurate. A Large Pie Template with Re-roll Scatter??? Yes Please. With the Barrage Rules? Even Better.
Str6 AP4 Annihilates all but MEQ infantry.
Got to be the Griffon for me.
Hell Hounds. (a pair of) I just love the smell of napalm in the morning. (The chimeras and Russes pitch in too.)
IG is the ideal Horde Anti-Horde army. You just need more templates and flamer than your opponent has squads, easily done.
Hellhounds eat up valuable Vendetta/Valkyrie spots. A BIG no no. And Griffons have limited range and are strictly anti-horde, nothing else.
The best anti-horde weapon would be the Manticore. Instakills anything it hits. Can fire up to 12 templates per game. Destroys vehicles if it hits them too. Unlimited range. Can fire directly to reduce scatter.
Hellhounds and pretty much anything else in the Guard army, but especially them. Ranged super-flamer and it will be hit on 6s in assault most of the time? Count me in. Also, Hellhounds don' t eat up so-called 'Valuable Vendetta/Valkyrie spots' for me, since Hellhounds are cheaper ($$) and much easier to transport than a Valkyrie (Of which I've only 1).

Yes, but if you had more Valks then you'd be taking them. They're fast. They're skimmers. They're transports. They lay down a stupid amount of firepower. Same with Vendettas. Means less of your footsoldiers have to buy Chimeras.
