Im writing this thread to try and help out a friend who plays blood angels.
He has been an on-and-off player for about 8 years like myself, and has always liked the blood angels.
A few years ago he bought a lot of assault marines to add to his army, which is quite a decent size now, and he is finally putting them together.
But basically now he has tried a couple of games with the 5th edition rulebook and the new blood angels codex, and he is hating them, and wants to give up on blood angels and try something different.
What effective units/strategies can i give him to help him win a game?
His main opponents are a friends eldar, and my tyranids.
He has tried drop pods, and troops on foot, but land speeders with HB/HF seem to be the only thing that actually does anything in his army.
Things like dreadnaughts etc are a waste of time when he is up against Avatar/wraithlord/hive tyrant/carnifex/zoanthropes/etc.
It just seems like blood angels pay rediculous amounts of points for their units, just to gain a death company guy which i dont think i have ever seen take a single swing at anything, never mind kill something.
(Although playing against armies where everything is I5 or I6 is a bit hard)
yeah, as of right now blood angels are the weakest, but not too weak, marine's variant or so I've heard. They can be ran pretty good if you have the right things. I advocate using two or even three Baal predators. The ammount of shots you can put out will even down the higher toughness things such as the carnifex or the avatar, and it can be used as an infantry killer.
Personally in the new codex I think they removed the quintessential part of the blood angels, their furious charge. I would load up on assault cannons with the new blood angels since I've been able to fit over 6 in a list before
As for troops you're kinda at a loss because of their high points cost, so just fill them in and use them as deployment keepers...all you can really do. I do like the death company furioso dreadnought though too, it has saved me multiple times. so just have him tinker with these ideas and find one that suits his style of play
I serve my master and do as he wants. He wants the badlands, thus they will be his.

Corbulo. Really good support character, furious charge bubble. Now can have I 5 to go with that jump pack mobility. Goes at the same time as most Eldar. HQs typically at 6 which gives them an edge vs just about anything.
Need a couple vehicles to provide cover for assault marines.
This is a list I use fairly regularly with minor variations. Especially the dread depending on the situation where I think I'm better off with more troops.
275 Assault Squad x 10, Jump Packs, Power Fist
165 Assault Squad x 5, Jump Packs, Power Fist
235 Tactical Squad x 10 Flamer, in Rhino
85 Death Company (3 free) x 5, Jump Packs
175 Furioso Dread in Drop Pod Venerable Heavy Flamer
65 Land Speeder Multi Melta
75 Land Speeder Multi Melta Typhoon
I don't find BA weak at all. I've been doing just fine in 5th.
If he wants to give up on them, I'd encourage him to try Space Wolves. Their Codex is so old but they're very good, especially since they got that FAQ update. They also get a new Codex soon which I'm sure will be insane, GW loves Marines.
If he wants to continue with BAs, he probably needs a standard assault army. Land Raider with some Assault Marines or Termies in it, JUmp Pack guys using vehicles for cover until they can assault, etc. BAs dn't have a lot other Marines don't get. Death Company underwhelm me but Baal Predators are awesome. It's kind of like regular Marines with an AC Predator. Sad they ruined such an awesome army.
If you want to play BA like normal marines, just play normal marines.
Play BA to take advantage of their benefits. Corbulo, Dante, VAS with melta and choppy bits, and scoring assault squads. It's hard for anybody to stop 60 flying marines getting rammed down their throat.

And Baal Preds FTW. They can kill anything if you're lucky on the 6s, plus HB sponsons and a Storm Bolter = Dakka Death.
I'm curious what Corbulo does in that list, does he walk along quietly hoping for 6's when he runs? I don't think he can take a Jump Pack and he doesn't fit in the Rhino.
Would have to give a rhino to the other assault squad with 5 men, or what I'd actually do is put him with the DC inside a rhino as the spear head. If you want to keep the other ASM with packs they can use that rhino as movable cover (not for all 15, I know), but I'm more of a fan of Rhinos for the ASM anyway for taking objectives more than assaulting into combat which the jump packs are more suited for.
I play BA a lot and I win ALOT. I play almost all jump packs. I take all the free DC I can, with JP and don't buy extra DC (they are too costly).
I put Corbulo in a BA Rhino with a combat squad, to keep up with the jump packs. I run one or two baal preds and two MM attack bikes. I also combat squad 10 devastators with 2 PC and 2 LC.
My tactical squad and devs are the only infantry units that don't have JP. I run 3 asslt squads (RAS), DC, Honor guard, and 1 or 2 VAS. None of those are 10 man squads. my RAS are 5 guys. My VAS are 6 or 7 depending on points...I usuall get 6 DC.
The Dante/Corbulo bubble is sick! Keep a cheap squad in front of your HG and DC to give those heavy hitters a cover save... RUSH FORWARD AND KILL!!!!
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
