I'm getting into Warhammer 40,000. I've narrowed down my army choice to the Imperial Guard or the Space Marines. I've presented my possible IG army and got feedback, tips, opinions, etc. Now I want to know what SM players think of my possible SM army. Here's what I was thinking for an Imperial Fist army:
1 Captain Lysander of the Imperial Fists
1 Terminator Squad
1 Tactical Squad
1 Land Raider Redeemer
Please tell me what you think. Is this army legal? How many points is it? Would it be effective enough? Thanks.
People aren't allowed to tell you the bare points of units, it's against forum rules. I'd advice buying or borrowing a Codex for SM, many people play them.
As for what to play, SM are a very balanced army, they can do it all. IG are always shooty, whether Mech or Gunline. It's largely a play style choice, what works for one won't work for all.
I think that your army is illegal as you only have one troop choice ( your tac squad). Also, you need to get a full command squad in order to get the Apothecary. I would recommend dropping the Dreadnought and getting another tac squad. From there, get Devastators for shooty armies, or Assault Marines for choppy armies. (sorry bout the play style descriptors, but I've been reading a lot of Ork lore, and am still trying to get the style of talking out of my head).
I don't think he has the Codex, just seen things that were effective or the models. A lot of people tend to do that, especially new players.
I think it'd be very helpful to know what size of army you want build. Would it be 1000 pts? More? What playstyle do you like?
Take a look at the army list section, it should give you a good idea what the above points cost would be. Right off you'll definitely need another tactical squad or scout squad to fulfill the compulsory two troops choices.

Overall, your list, without the command squad that would come out of the apothecary, and adding in a second tactical squad (for legality), you'll probably hit around 1100. With a command squad you could make 1250 pts.
However, as a note, Lysander is great for a themed list, but in reality to use him to his maximum effectivness you'll need different units. This is where having a codex is vital. I think Lysander is best in a Sternguard squad, for obvious reasons once you've read both Lysander's and the Sternguard entries.
Overall, SM are designed to be generalists who can be specialized through their elites, fast attack, and heavy support. The biggest question from here would have to be, what is your playstyle? Are you a shooty player, an assaulting player? Do you favor a strong defense or strong offense? Do you want to be tougher, though slower, or more nimble and mobile but with less armor? These answers will be vital in determining how you want to build your army.
Those answers will also determine whether you want to play IG or SM. As others have said, IG are more of a gunline army. SM can be whatever you want them to be. You should probably get both the IG and SM codex books and determine what you like more.
