I'm planning to equip most if not all of my vets with "shotguns", but i was toying around with the idea of using lascarbines (the ones from the vehicle bits sprue) for shotguns.
They are carbines after all which means they would have shorter effective range and be easier to manoeuvrethan the lasrifles.
However, how would my opponents see this, and, more importantly, would this be allowed during a tournament? The lascarbines are quite easily distinguished from the long lasguns/rifles so personally I wouldn't have a problem with it. Maybe i'm just biased though
Basically, i like the idea more of these troops having sub machine guns than shotguns in close quarter combat and although the shotgun is popular, most airborne and specialised units use SMGs/carbines instead of rifles or shotguns.
So, how viable is this?
I personally would equip most veterans with shotguns. The list I'm testing right now has three units of Veterans, and two are equipped with shotguns and special weapons. As for the WYSIWYG issue, here's what I think:
First, there are no specific miniatures for Veterans. The GW shop sells Vostroyan, Catachan, and Cadian troops, and here's what weapons it says it includes:
"10 lasguns, two laspistols, two flamers, two Vox-casters, and a selection of bladed weapons."
No shotguns. They also don't sell shotgun bitz, as far as I know. So, because there's no way to get official GW shotguns, you can use normal lasgun-equipped troops and say they count as veterans with shotguns.
It's the same thing that happens with the Necron Monolith. The rules in the codex SPECIFICALLY tell you the monolith has to be mounted on a flying base, probably the only skimmer that does so. However, GW doesn't provide a flying base when you buy a Monolith, therefore you can play a Monolith in official tournaments without using a flying base. In fact, I've heard stories of people having problems because they added a base themselves.
So, as a rule of thumb, if there's no official GW mini or bitz, you can make something else count as what is required. The closest you can get to the Veterans with shotguns are normal troops with lasguns, so that'lll have to do.
Necron Army Building Maxima: Beware of Phase Out
Forge World has some nice shotguns and veterans.
Cadian Hardened Veterans Upgrade Pack
One way to distinguish veterans is to make them look less uniformed, carrying extra equipment or made to look tough. But no one will really care if you say they have shotguns and instead they have lascarbines.
Personally as long as I can tell at a moments glance that they arent equipped with lasguns, instead using shotguns it would be fine with me.
Ask me about the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White Bike!!!
Considering I'm using the metal Vostroyan models for my vets; I just tell my opponent; "See the guys with the Russian Hats? Those Lasguns are Shotguns." And I've yet to run into an asshole.
112th Cadian Rifles - Since January 2009
MY Record - Overall 4/5/5
Thanks for the insights guys. I guess i'll just equip them with lascarbines then and make it count as shotguns. Hopefully it won't be a big deal at tournaments Now back to mass producing those 50 guys and accompanying Chimeras
The catchan command squad also come with a flip hinged stock lasgun like the tank crew ones.
You could try to get hold of necromunda shotguns (expensive and hard)
Forgeworld (Very expensive, i wasn't happy with the bits)
or do some conversions - I've seen some nice cut down lasguns, drilled / with fine piping for barrels, and some with boltgun grips as the pump action grip - it works well.(alot of the cadian arms with the left hand attached required though)

The phrase that seems to keep cropping up is "substantially different". As long as they don't look too much like lasguns I really can't see any problems especially seeing as GW don't do ay "official" models.

I wouldnt have a problem with it, as long as the models were visibly different from the regular lasgun wielding vets.
That being said, this is a great opportunity to personalize your army, so why not seize it and model some shotguns, check this recent thread for ideas http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...-shotguns.html
