Has anyone had any luck or have any stories they'd like to share regarding Scouts with Shotguns?
The reason I ask is I am considering buying a box so I recently started play testing them but have only gone up against IG in which they are almost useless. Their set up was 9x Shotguns and Sgt. w/Power Fist.
I like the whole infiltrating thing in which they were quickly behind enemy lines backing up some Drop Pod's but they only got to shoot at a Vendetta from the rear (out of 8 hits none rolled a 6 to glance), they took down Marbro although I think he took out 2, and they assaulted a Leman Russ leaving it shaken for 1 turn. Not a good debut but not a bad one either.
I see people playing them with snipers all the time but it seems to defensive for me and my armies usually run a high count of scoring units camped at my objective anyway. So anyone suggestions, stories or comments please!!!
Get BP+CCW, put them in Land Speeder Storms, and get a 1st round assault with -2 on the enemy LD. If you don't want them to die early, then keep them in reserves and outflank them. They're very fast with a 24" flat-out move and great for the late-game objective grab/contest. I've just recently started using them and it makes my army more flexible and adds an element of speed to it.
Unfortunately the shotgun is not really worth the trouble.
If you want to hold an objective and shoot some (I know you don't, I'm just listing this for sake of completeness) the standard bolters have the further range and better AP, while sniper rifles are even further ranged and pinning and rending and can wound anything. Heavy weapons also go very well with these squads.
If you want to play the scouts aggressively than bolt pistol and close combat weapon give you a second attack for each of them. You can't shoot twice, but still once, and that shot will pierce weak armor unlike the shotguns.
The shotgun is only superior to the other alternatives in so very few situations that it just doesn't pay to use them. If they were double or at least one-and-a-half times the range, or if they were bolter-equivalent AP, then there'd be some use for them. But with the current stats I'd advise you to go either bolters, sniper rifles or bolt pistol and close combat weapons...
The only use for a shotgun in a scout squad that comes to mind for me is on a Sergeant with a Powerfist, since he won't be getting an extra attack from a pistol anyway.
Space Marines: W15/L7/D3
Imperial Guard: W6/L4/D0
Shotguns are good on powerfist sergeants because they don't get the extra attack in h2h anyway an extra shot on the way in is useful for them. other than that they're more of a coolness option.
Shotguns should have rules where their stats are different at different ranges, like assault 2 at 12" and assault 3 at 6" Then they'd be worth using.

Thanks for your input I will definitely try out the Scouts with Bolt Pistols and CCW and throw them into the fray. Yeah I was hesitant to try this as the Shotguns get you more shots into a crowd to thin enemy lines. But seeing as how they still get an extra attack in CC and they'll probably be going first against several enemies anyway, I'll give it a shot.
Great suggestion it looks like alot of fun, but I don't intend on buying Speeders as they're too fragile for my taste.
Thanks for the suggestions!!
I like to mix in a few shotguns with my combat scouts, just for a little extra oomph at range. It doesn't affect their combat strength much, but those extra shots can sometimes make all the difference. Of course, the rest of the time they're mostly useless, but hey, it works for me.
I don't see what you guys have against shotgun scouts. I use them all the time, and they usually pay of pretty good. It's the only massable assault weapon we get in our armies, which I've mounted up in LSS's quite often to good effect.
Shotguns are bad ... really bad. But they have their use ... sometimes. If you want Scouts that HAVE to move (= no rapid fire) I would take Shotguns. Sure, Bolters have better AP. But does it really matter? In 5E most models will have a 4+ save anyway because of cover (if you play on a relatively well made board), so the AP5 of the bolter is useless either.
Land Speeder Storm Scouts are one unit I could imagine with Shotguns. But usually I prefer Scouts with Sniper Rifles, giving them some purpose. I don't like other Scouts at all (except the ones with heavy weapons), they are pretty weak ... like guardsmen (ok, not THAT weak ... but still).
I tried out the Snipers and the Bolt Pistol & CCW Scouts last night and I don't like the sitting still to have to fire on a 50/50 chance because of their BS. I used Combat Squad on the 10 Infiltrated half of them and the other half stayed camped on the their objective. The whole game the 5 that camped only got 1 wound in because of Rending, and the other 5 only got 1 round of shooting but it was to a vehicle and there were no Rending shots, they got assaulted shortly after by the Infiltrating Scouts w/Bolt Pistol & CCW!!!
These guys tore it up they took down 3 Combat Squads!! 1 Scouts and 2 Tactical's!! The Powerfist on the Sgt. helped though. The Snipers are too defensive for my taste, the Tactical Marine's I used to help them protect the objective were just as effective but have better shots, better armor and can move and fire in case they need to.
So it's definitely between the Shotgun Scouts and the Bolt Pistol/CCW ones. We'll see what happens.
