Exterminator, Eradicator, or Vanquisher? I'm building an Exterminator turret out of a pair of Walker autocannons I've got, and I was wondering what other players thought of the three varients we've gotta build (or buy through forgeworld)
Personally, the Exterminator looks boss, especially if it's got Pask inside of it. Looks like it'll wreck havoc on AV12 or below, and even do some damage to AV13 in a pinch. Its not an issue of running the other Leman Russes ( I run the LRBT and the Demolisher/Executioner on a regular basis), but between these 3 which one do you guys prefer?

The eradicator; cover is huge in 5th edition and ignoring it is awesome. Almost every army has some lightly armoured scout type unit (usually one that has a bonus to its cover save, and not much armour) sitting on their objective and blasting that away is great.
Think about podding marines. Often they leave a unit or two of sniper scouts with camo to hold their objective; you kill or threaten that and you've got a tactical squad podding in at the other end of the table rather than meltaing your tanks.

i have to agree, the eradicator would be my preference of these three, even though a colossus is probably more what you want, i just cant stand vanquisher and exterminator because of the ballistic skill, at least this way you can give those pathfinders a kick up the rear, or take out those fire warriors in a bunker
You really need to look at your list as a whole, determine what area(s) lack, and then base your choice of tank on that particular need.
While an eradicator has uses, would you really use one if you already run two or more hell hounds? I do, so I tend to use the exterminator as my variant russ of choice just to mix it up a little. Sometimes forcing multiple saves against low armour save units is better than having another cover negating weapon.
Of course... then there's always the punisher for a bit of fun....
What Guardsmen dont want to hear...
"Ok boys, time to fix bayonets!"
If you HAD to use one of those, I'd go Eradicator. I just use Demolishers personally.
Exterminator: Good tank but it competes with the Hydra for the role and doesn't fare to well. You put Pask in here though and it becomes quite a nasty light-medium tank killer. expensive for what it becomes though.
Eradicator: Like the guys above the ability to ignore cover is a very good boon in 5th ED. Any Infantry that isn't a MEQ will die to this tank. As i generally play Kuston Force feilding orks this becomes a tank worth it's weight. Against Marines though I'd rather take the reliable Demolisher though.
Vanquisher: Nasty nasty gun. Shame about the bloke firing it. 155pts for a 1 shot BS3 gun. Thats not great. Put pask in this guy to make it BS4 he becomes nasty, but again he becomes expensive and we've got better things in out list for the job.
I'd go for the Eradicator out of the 3, but I'll just stick with the Demolisher/Russ in my lists.
Hmm, choices, choices. I voted the eradicator, simply for the ignorance of cover saves. The other two are too specialist and require pask or can be replaced by other units for cheaper, more reliable options. Maybe running something big and scary could work to make your enemy shoot it to the exclusion of all else, but that is a very expesnive and silly strategy.
BTW, I run two vanilla russes. In a 1000pt list. My enemy tries to kill them, and then my infantry get him! Add into the mix a pair of autocannon armed sentinels on the outflank, and you have a viable killing force. If I could outflank an exterminator, I might take it. However, for that many points, I can buy 3 autocannon sentinels + extras. Rear armour, here I come!
Father Mulcahy: Just as the Lord said to Noah, "Everything in pairs."
Pierce Hawkeye: Of course the Lord was holding three aces at the time.
While I don't have the Codex in front of me, I do believe the exterminator is twin linked, which lessens the BS3 portion of it.
My list doesnt neccisarily lack anything overall, but I was wondering what people thoght would be good to base off of. With the prevelance of speeders, etc..., nowadays, I figured the Exterminator would be a good alternative, even if I have to turn the gun on Monstrous creatures, etc...
As for sentinels...I've been spoiled by Eldar war walkers. I just can't justify the price, to be honest. I figure putting the autocannons on the russ, with lascannon and Pask, while expensive, becomes one hell of a tank killer, and an accurate one to boot, especially if I DO remember correctly about the TL portion.
Heavy 4, S7, AP4, TL? Yes please. S8 with pask? Count me in!
For that price you could get 2 Hydras and than some, which is twice as many TL shots that actually ignore Skimmers and Bike cover saves. Way better option in every case.
True, but until I fabricate the Hydra turret, I am lacking in one important area: Hydra turrets.
Coincidentally, when I design the plans for the Hydra turret, I will post them here. All you'll have to do is print them out, and put it on plasticard or thick cardboard, cut, glue, and you'll have a turret for Hydras, Manticores, etc... The guns themselves, you'll have to scavenge (Valkryie missiles work well for Manticore missiles)
