I don't have access to Codex Eldar but will be playing against them regularly over the next few weeks. Do their tanks/transports (Wave Serpents?) get holo-fields, or whatever they're called, to reduce armour penetratin to 1D6 and weapon strength to 8? Thought I read something to that effect. If so are my meltas still enough to take them down or should I be looking at something else?
The waveserpents can transport 10 guys. They have the holo-fields in the front and side with an armor of 12/12/10. The holo-field makes your str 8 or above shots count as streng 8 when shooting from the front or side. The best weapons to use against elder are multi-shot str 8 weapons or hit them from behind. With a pathetic armor of only 10 they are easy to drop. The Holo-Fields only work from shooting so if you get something into meele they can get the addition D6. I find the missile launcher is the best weapon against all elder as it's cheap, does the best hit, and the template hits can kill their troops easily. Deep-striking against elder really messes with them and try to go first in a kill mission so their tanks won't have moved. In a capture and hold mission go second because they can go upto 36 inch's in a single turn with a transport. I know this because my 1850 elder army has 5 wave serpents in it + 3 other tanks.
In general, you'll either want to play it mobile, get behind them and hit them with S5+ things, or to hit them from the front with copious S8 things.
In all honesty, once they start moving, you'll have a lot of difficulty bringing them down, no matter what you've got. In reality it may be best to plan counters for the things in the Wave Serpents than to try and bring down the serpents before they get to you. One of them is gonna get through, considering you'll have to hit him, have a 5+ minimum to penetrate, a 1/3 (1/2 w/ melta) chance to bring it down, and then he'll claim a save for moving flat-out. Basically, unless you throw entire walls of heavy weapons at the thing, its living through the first move phase, and that means whatever wants to get near you will.
In reality, this might be one of the places where a devastator squad might be useful. Take two MLs and two Plasma Cannons. If you get to take the first shot, try to take out the vehicles, but if they drop their load, hit them with the Plasma Cannons.
Of course, you're prolly gonna have to deal with Warlocks and such too. Basically, Eldar are mean.
You would love my list. For this weekends tournament I am running 5 wave serpents and 3 elder prisim tanks. They tend to do a ton of damage. Inside are a farseer with a unit of warlocks. 2x Guardian storm squads, 1x banshee squad, and a firedragoon squad. I win a lot.
I find a hammer does the trick pretty quick. Once both sides have deployed casually reach over and hit each of the offending Eldar tanks really very hard. Seems to be alot quicker than missile launchers, lascannons or CC. ;-) I get kicked out of tournaments alot. ;-)
Eldar Vehicles have two different kinds of cneaky energy shields. The first on the Wave Serpents Is the energy field, it's the one that ignores any seconddice and only counts weapons as max S8. The other, which Falcons and Fire Prism's get is the Holo-field. It requires you to roll two dice for any rols on the vehicle damage chart and requires you to take the lowest one.
As far as I remember, the Holo-field is always on, but the Energy field doesn't happen if you shoot them in the rear or assault them.
To take down waveserpents it is large numbers of str 7 or 8 shots anything bigger is wasted on it and special bonuses to pen rolls don't happen. Of course if you get the back armor it is just a small little AV 10 no special rules. The falcon and fireprism get the holofields. If it is a fireprism just shake it and forget it ( a lot of eldar players have started to take these without holofields to save points so ask if they have them or not ). Falcons are a bit tougher as they can carry 6 models inside. If you need to stop it I once again recommend volume of shots.
