    How viable is an infantry heavy army?

    I was wondering how well a 2000pt SM army would be with about
    6 tac squads
    2 squads of devastators (not sure what guns)
    few assault marines
    squad of terminators

    Would would complement this well? What would you add or remove?

    Now I know that these arent officialy foot slogging units, although dreadnaughts would beyour best choice when expanding this army, in addition to your one unit of terminators I would take two Venerable dreads, even thoough the venerable dread is som what of a waste compared point for point with a normal dread they will need the extra protection having to slog it, and having no other veichles to take the heat off them, and as there can only be two of them allow them to maximise their potential.

    Deffo use a special character, maybe Shrike. Drop a dev unit and take two assault squads with PF and flamers. As a starting point use ML's in the dev unit. Combat squad your tac units all with ML's that will give you a total of 10 crack missiles or templates a turn!

    Shrike will allow your assault units to do exactly that and quickly.

    Maybe drop the termies and add sternguard in a pod and or some vanguard maybe. termies are good but I find sternguard that bit better with my playing style.

    Lack punch. Tacticals are good but not so good as orks or chaos sm troop choices or sisters of battle for mass them. There is no reason to have so much tacticals especially if they are not mobile.

    I think that basic concept is without AV units. In my opïnion succesfull could be army if its have too much something like 3 devs/3 termies.

    Defintely give it a try, the Troops are good enough to handle anything but of course put them in vehicles.
    I would go with 2 maxed out Assault Squads both Sgt's of course with Powerfist. You're going to need the speed to match (or exceed) their manouverability.
    As for the Devastators go with the cheap options, Heavy Bolter or Missle Launcher. If you're going with 2 Squads have one with Bolters and the other with Missle Launchers. The other guns are just too many points and can easily be placed on the Tactical Squads.

    The best all infantry list I have seen at 2k with max tactical units was the following.

    HQ = Calgar = 250 points

    Elites = 10 Sternguard = 250 points

    Troops * 4 = 10 Marines = 180 (720) points
    - w/ missile launcher, plasma gun
    Troops * 2 = 10 Marines = 175 (350) points
    - w/ missile launcher, melta gun

    Fast Attack * 2 = 10 Assault Marine = 215 (430) points
    - sergeant w/ power fist

    This list as lots of fire power but is a stand and shoot type army, the assault marines are best used as counter charge units or to back up the special weapon group when you combat squad. Calgar is great for his special rule on moral test and to deter units from assaulting an area. Cover is a big help to this army though as they lack AV units. Hope this helps you and is what you are seeking.

    I'd actually recommend against using dreads if you've got no other vehicles in your list - they'll be primaty targets for anti-tank weapons.

    Make em waste their lascannon shots on a standard space marine

    I had a foot only marine list and it kicked butt.

    I had 3 dev squads, 1 with 4x plasma cannon, 2 with 4x missile launchers.

    Tactical squads had lascannons

    sternguard with meltaguns etc

    Tactical squad heavy with transports is very competitive. Drop Pod lists run 3+ Tactical Squads, and Rhino Rush about the same. The old foot slogging Marine list isn't so good though.

    and i guess your oppenents were local farmers and house wives?....lol
    Superior stamina may win battles, but the ability to quickly recover wins wars.
