In what kind of conditions is the Grenadiers (grants squad with 4+ armor) useful? I recently played a few games using Grenadier Vets in Plasmagun Chimeras (the reasons is to have better chance in Gets Hot and if the Chimera happens to explode at least 50% of my men can survive).
Do you guys think its a decent doctrine to use?
To be brutaly honest, no. 30pts is alot just for a 4+ save, especially when most Vets nowadays are safely tucked away inside a Chimera. If your Vets are not mounted then Camo Cloaks gives you better protection.
Having said that I've got 3000pts of Carapace vets, over 100 models but that's purely because i love the Kasrkin models. If it weren't for fluff and the 'cool' factor i wouldn't bother with the upgrade at all.
Unfortunately the kasrkin clash with the elites section. I would however use the old stormtrooper models, but they are very expensive, and would cost over 70 dollars a squad to make. For that money I can buy 2 tanks. Although, there's no reason to say that they just don't have hotshot lasguns.
this may sound like a modelling question which is quite related to the topic.....
how to make them WYSIWYG with carapace armor? any ideas?
I simply use Kasrkin to represent Vets in Carapce. Making heavy weapons for them is a git and the models are expensive but hey, I think it's worth it. They're nicer models than the Old Storm Troopers though.
If you want you can just buy the Forge World Veterans packs. theres one set with Kasrkin style helments and i don;t think anone would otice the difference between Guardsmen with those heads and Kasrkin from a distance. If you want to make them like Kasrkin though you can always sculpt some extra armour plates on their knees or what ever.
It is quite difficult to sculpt on carapace plates, but after doing a few models it wasn't that bad. It still takes time and practice and plenty of patience. There are guides out there how to do it, but I still would rather just buy metal models.
I don't like it, Carapace armour is overr 50% the cost of just getting them a chimera. A chimera would almost double their mobility, provide extra protection, and give them 2 extra heavy weapons to play around with.
I'd much rather have a chimera than armour that will be negated by 40-50% of my opponents weapons anyway.

Not really saying carapace is worth the cost, but something to think about!
Just think if you take carapace, we'll be even closer to a space marines armor, something we strive for. I mainly take carapace in case the tank explodes, that way 7 out of 10 men don't die, and most live. I roll horribly for saving for some reason. Also, when you get hit with 3 flamers yourself, you don't die horribly, you have some chance of living. Although with 6 squads running around that gets expensie, and for the cost of all 6, i could buy a psyker battle squad in a chimera and 3 ratlings or so.
