I'm going to be fighting a couple of Tyranid armies in the near future. I was trying to find out the best weapons to use against them. I play Blood Angels, and am not sure exactly the content of their armies (swarm, nidzilla, etc...). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I think Land Raiders are a pretty good choice on SM's side. Else take anything that can reliably kill lots of cheap infantry at range. (Large) Blasts should do well, if they ignore cover > awesome. Thunderfire cannons should do very well (until it gets overrunned).
Imo the biggest problem is to keep distance, after turn 1 or 2 they're at your face ... and you won't win a close combat duel.
Land raiders have a good chance here. They have AV14 on each side, so melee won't harm them. It ignores every attack of Str 7 or lower. So if you kill all Carnifexes and Tyrants (etc) ... you already won (which sounds easier than it is )

Can't speak so much for the Blood Angels, but what works for me as a Black Templars player is my large crusader squads out in front backed up by three more brandishing Missile Launchers and a Heavy Bolter. Does pretty well to breakup the main advance while my assault squad and sword brethren come in from either flank to condense the front. Land Raider's a good choice as well if you want to get some terminators into the fight really quickly, or if you want to use it as a firing platform to pick off some of those bigger Tyranid creatures.
Battle for Pollux
Campaign tick is changing from Wednesdays to Mondays, first week of November.
Whirlwinds are always a plus. Flamers in any unit you plan on using to assault. Predator Destructors (Autocannon, H.Bolters, S. Bolter) is a nice firebase option. I use Land Speeders with 2 H. Bolters or a Typhoon ML and a H.Bolter.
Also, using multiple tactical squads rapid firing, will seriously dent swarms, and has a solid change to knock off wounds from the Carnifex. Against the MCs, volume of fire is a very adequate way to bring them down, without getting minced in CC.
I have yet to play nids under 5th ed. rules but I think sternguard and snipers would be of use in taking down the big guys. If you arm the sternguard with a few combiflamers and/or heavy flamers you can also mow down swarms of lesser nids.
The landraider seems like a good idea too but you have to take down the monstrous creatures fast. A hivetyrant with wings will usually assault you in turn 2...
Also if I remember correctly the zoantroph has ha psi attack that can damage vehicles.
In 4th ed. concentrated bolter fire proved very successfull vs gaunts and genestealers.
Really depends on what they throw at you.
Nids are dangerious but space marines have a few weapons that turn them into mush. The best you can do against the big bugs is sternguard. They hit on a 3+ and wound on a 2+. Flamers are also huge. If you take a land raider with the flamestorm cannons will turn nids to mush as well! Also Vulkan is your friend. Snipers also screw up big bugs.
This is the easiest strategy to beat nids with before their new dex un-nerfs them - put everything you own ina metal box. Everything, plants and animals included. Tyranids are incapable of opening up vehicles (other than CC) and all you have to do is prance away and use the machine spirit. Game.
Also, templates of any type, meltas and las cans.
I hope my bitterness has not shone through lol.

if you have a vindicator and some termines don't knock that combo out of the list either back them up with a good armed tactical squad and they can hold there own against warriors & stealers. the biggest weakness i had was the lack of melee units and the fact that my army really relies on firepower more than anything.
id agree whirlwinds, predator and a vindicator would be a good choice for giving a good fire base. i used a sit and wait for them to come to me thought.
it did work but if i had a whirlwind it would of been better.
dark angels army: vengance of caliban 3500pt army
wins:1 draw:2 loss:1
Assault cannons & Heavy bolters for the little bugs.
Lascannons and Multi-melta's for the big bugs.
Also remember Powerfists are your friend against Carnifexs.
