Has anyone ever used a platoon standard and had it make a difference, be useful, or otherwise be worth its 15 points?
I personally have never used it cause it seems like a completely silly piece of wargear for a 5 man PCS in a shooty army that sucks at CC. Doubly silly since it only affects the PCS and none of the other squads around them unlike the regimental standard. What are the chances of a PCS even surviving one round of CC?

The, probably, general opinion is : Platoon Standards are a complete and utter waste.
If you want a standard get a regimental.
As for a single PCS surviving a full Assault phase? low. Very low. Except against other guardsmen and Taus, maybe against a remnant of gaunts, but anything more powerful than that would be bad odds.
Don't bother, if they get into close combat it's probably with something that is supposed to be in close combat (which means your squad is more than likely dead anyways)
Back from a long adventure.
I agree with both of the above. That why I want to hear if anyone has had a success story with what has to be the silliest and most foolish choice for wargear in our codex.
The only "Guards win Close combat by 1, run down enemy squad." stories i have involve my Firebats vet's sarge, so yeah not quite relevant.
He did that 4 time so far, one time against crisis suits, two times against fire warriors and 1x against a full squad of Termagaunts who were just out of synapse after the demolisher landed it's shell on the warrior squad babysitting them. (all four times he was the last one alive in the squad at the end of the round.)
This sarge is now getting converted, he earned his Powerfist. Might be an innefficient choice, but if he keeps at it, he just might win next time he has a standoff against a Carnifex.
I finally had a chance to use my newly painted Platoon Standard in combat today. The PCS charged into glorious battle alongside their infantry squad, against the foul plague marines...and they were promptly cut down in their entirety. Pretty much exactly what everyone said would happen.
As for the 20 man blob squad they charged with, they tied up the plague marines for the rest of the game.
Not to mention, a full Infantry Company with seven banners looks just awesome. I say looks-wise Platoon Standards are awesome. Anything else is pure rubbish. Game-wise, I have never killed anyone with a flagpole. It has a Ballistic Skill of negative 2.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
I use them solely to remember where my PCS's are, as they look pretty cool. Other than that, waste of points. The Regimental standard has save many a sargeant from being execute by a commissar though.
Platoon command squads may not be good on their own, but support them with an infantry squad or ten and they can get qutie deadly. Make sure you stick a priest with them to maximise combat potential. I suppose the platoon standards are a bit expensive, but like the others said, they do look cool.

1 or 2 terminators left after you lasgunned 'em with other squads? Charge the command squad in. 5 Marines left? Smash 'em with your powerfists. You've got enough ablative wounds to ensure the commissar and officer probably survive against a smaller enemy elite squad of some kind. And it needs to be done - that same enemy squad will enevitably end up destroying some high value target of yours if you don't finish them off then and there.
In higher points values I even take a medic.
Honestly, I just find the squad too invaluable at this task to not kit out this way. Ignore the close combat phase at your peril - sometimes it's another, useful means to defeating your opponent, and should not merely be restricted to the world of Orks, Nids and Khorne Beserkers.
In fact, my whole army is VERY assault oriented, and tends to do kinda well at it too! That's the flexibility of IG - smash 'em with guns for a while, and then overrun the remnants with your conscripts and commissars!
As for the standard though? In large points values, maybe, maybe. But really, I think the cost of a meltagun and a flamer is just a little high.
That they do! Cool indeed.
Do you have a lot of luck running priests? I used to use a LOT of them in my skitarii, however with the new codex I feel that simply running another guard squad could be a better buy.

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
