I was having a flip through guard codex, and i just saw some awesome sniper units. Ive never used them before so im wondering are they useful? if they are good what are their primary targets.
Snipers are good against high-toughness targets, as they always wound on a fixed dice roll (usually 4+).
They can also pin units, this works best on low-leadership targets. For all other tasks there are better options. In 4th edition they could also penetrate some armour if they were lucky, but rending was nerved down to d3 so it's usually useless now.
Don't use them on low-toughness targets or high-leadership units (if you just want to pin them).
They aren't that great against a lot of armies, especially with a lot of mech out. Against foot IG, 'Nidzilla or something like that they could have a decent game.

What sniper units are we talking about here? Because you can't bring Vets, Ratlings or Company Command Squads as Inducted Guard in a DH army, and Platoon Command Squads with Sniper Rifles are a waste of points.
yeah like frank said. what sniper units are you talking about?
honestly i don't see the use of snipers anymore since 5th edition came out(all mech). The only decent snipers are eldar rangers.

If you want a sniper, why not go all out and get a Vindicare assassin? Personally, I've never had much luck and prefer my Calidus assassin ('tis rare she fails me =D). Honestly, I don't think snipers really have a place here anyway.
The Vindicare? Seriously? Don't make me laugh. Any Marines player can tell you that Telion kicks the crap out of the Vindicare in terms of actual in-game effectiveness.
Don't take the Vindicare. Stick to the Callidus or the Eversor.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

1 unit of 10 marines rapid fire = 20 shots
no armour save
So your lookin at using 3 squad of marines to witter down an orc horde and still not kill the PClaw or one model who can pick the only real one that is a threat
Remember if your Rapid firing them and do not make them lose enough models and they charge you, the boyz out do MEQS in combat because of sheer number and a PClaw hidden in them what you can not kill till killed the rest because of wound allocation.
