So my friend comes up to me with five priests, the ones from the Inquisition, with Swords and books and stuff, not the ones you find on GW's website under Imperial Guard...I am sure I can use them for Guard, thats not really my question...with their close combat rules, what IG unit would benefit most from having a priest roll with them?
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
Stick them in a unit of grey knight terminators...or has that been FAQ'd? I can't remember.
If you really want to take them. Stick them in a Blob squad. 30 or 40 fellas re-rolling to hit on the charge will drag something down. Especially if it's got a Commissar in there with a Power Weapon. Straken Nearby will help out too.
Just be prepared. Priest are indipendant characters with 1 wound. They can be picked out and killed easily.
Against a Toughness 4 opponent? Orks say,
You've got 30 blokes (3 Serg's) thats 66 attacks. That should be 49 hits (ish)
If you've got Straken nearby they'll be Str4 meaning you've got half wounds. - 25 wounds.
Thats alot of 6+ saves to make. You should kill around 18 Orks
Against Marines/Necrons you'll kill around 8.
Thats not including the Commi or the Priest.
Good luck on getting that entire unit into combat and get the Charge.
If you have rending penal legion troops that can work but I think Grey knight terminators has to be the best combination. Put straken nearby and watch 16 WS5 I5 S7 powerweapons that reroll hits do their work.
Because the priest is an independant character you can often place him so he cannot be hit in combat especially if you are in a big 30 man blob of guardsmen.

I think you might want to check your rule book there mate, IC's have to charge forward and attempt to get into combat, i can see that you could spread out your guys so that if you placed him at the back of a large unit he would not physically be able to get into combat but if you did that alot of your mean would'nt either, esentially ruining any advantage from having the preist.
i say the only way to "protect" him is to try and have as few models in combat range with him as possible and rely on that 4+ inv.
I run one Eviscerator Priest with my Counter charge "Firebat" Vet team (3 flamers (sarge now has a powerfist due to well being awesome of late), All Shotguns & Demolition, sitting in a Multilaser/Heavy Flamer Chimera) I try whenever possible to "multicharge" the priest on any vehicular target nearby or in such a way as that it can't be hit at on the initial charge (unless it's against Tau then i try to get him to swing at something while minimizing the number of swing they can take back at him).
'f course i don't charge unless i have to or it's just remnants (and usually anything they dumped the Demo +3 flamers +chimera's heavy flamer +shotguns IS remnants). Pretty nice results with the squad so far, maybe not "competitive" but very fun and suit my tastes for napalm.
Priests can take Eviscerators which makes them somewhat effective, but as has been mentioned they are also Independent Characters and can therefore be picked out in close combat. So, put them in a blob squad with Commissar and keep them at the back (not in btb). Risky but it could work.

It's simple. Move your cloud of 20 penal legion so the front figures are 2-3" from the enmy but your back ranks are 6-8" away. Make sure the priest is right at the back around 8-10" from the enemy. Then assault. The closest guys move in then the further away guys move to 2" behind them but still in combat. The poor old priest moves 6" towards the enemy but just cant quite reach. What a shame. Almost as if you planned it. Just keep the priest as the only one over 8" from the enemy and he should be the only one left out. Also your squad members can use the 2" of a base to base mdel but the priest cannot guving you another 2" safety margin.
Anyway unless you charged a hughe unit that can pile in through any gaps in your guardsmen the priest will be unengaged for the first round of combat so ramains safe. After that who cares? He has used his bonus.

They are a fluffy and cool addition to a IG force. Which is reason enough for me to include them.
