My son moved over to England a few months ago to go to college and I am still in Ireland working. We have been modeling and playing 40K on and off for the last 5 years but haven’t done much for a 12 month or more.
He has a Chaos army that includes 2 Daemon Lords, 3 Landraiders, 2 Predators, 2 Defilers, a dreadnought, 20 terminators and 60 odd troops etc. and I’m re-building an Imperial guard army for the new codex.
There is one problem – He has Colonel Straken chained to the side of one of his Landraiders. (Since our Catachan army was superceded by the 4th Ed. Codex and Colonel Straken went AWOL).
In October 2010, meet at Warhammer World, Nottingham for a campaign to see who keeps Straken.
Mission 1 – Recon 500pts – An informant has information as to where Colonel Straken can be found. Find and hold till the end of the game. Winner choose terrain layout for next scenario.
Mission 2 – Rescue 1750 pts – Objective: To immobilize his Landraider (without sending it to Kingdom Come) and have a scoring unit in base contact at the end of the game.
Mission 3 – A – Extraction (Get him out!) 2000pts – Only if Colonel Straken has been rescued!
Defend an area with 500 pts (and Colonel Straken) until re-inforcements arrive and he can be safely extracted. He must reach a friendly table edge before the game finishes.
Chaos have 1000 pts to start. Escalation. NB. Colonel Straken is in no state to fight but cannot be killed either.
Mission 3 – B – Retrieve the Prisoner 2000pts – If Colonol Straken is still held by the forces of Chaos!
Everything on the table – no reserves. Get Colonel Straken at any cost and get him safely to a friendly table edge.
Mission 4 – Revenge! – All available units in mass annihilation battle. No Force Organisation Restrictions BUT all models must be fully painted and count WYSIWYG.
Points level will be balanced to the smallest army. Colonel Straken can be used if he was rescued.
We both have a lot of work to do – army lists, conversions and painting, joining clubs again because neither of us has played much and of course Psyching each other up.
He intends to join LO as well so any help to either of us would really appreciated.
Thanks for reading this – what do you think?

I think you're going to have a very fun year, and that this is a great idea.
I'd recommend going for glances in the second mission so the dice gods don't accidentally kill Straken off. Valks/Vendettas would also help get him off the board edge quickly.

I came, I saw, I got a different type of Leman Russ.

Rules for grenades are on page 72 of the rulebook.
You're going to have trouble holding stuff, as you'll simply get butchered in melee, and some of these games are for focusing on one point. troublesome.
Your army list is going to be defined by how much you're going to rely winning the games so you can set up the terrain (a huge advantage)
If Stracken still has his special rules (counter charge and furious assault within 12") there is some advice - I'd 1) to beaty off the chaos scum use MASSES of gunline and hope to just beat them back with massed fire. First rank, second rank will be a commonly used order (as will fire on my target for your men further back, although only if the armour pen would make their cover save important)
I'd suggest vet squads as the points are worth it r.e. bang for your buck. (I see plasma being popular here). I'd also kit them out with power fists (counter charge will help to add up the attacks, to at least trim attackers down. Wounding marines on a 2, no save? ok then.)
but still pack standard infantry - you need them as a meat shield around the core of your vets.

Thanks for the feedback.
It's going to be a busy year but I hope to have a few test armies made up for gaming soon.
just got to find a local club...
Started working on ideas for 1750 army - what do you think so far?
Have a look on Imperial Guard Army Lists/ 1750pts vs Chaos need help.
Also have a few pics posted in Showcase of stuff I've built so far.
He accepted the challenge today and hopefully will be joining LO soon.
PS How do you link stuff on LO???
IG Best Gen 1st overall of 10 DE 4th overall of 6
Eldar 3rd Overall/Best General of 26--2nd Overall/Best General of 7--1st Overall/Best General of 11
Thanks I'll try that.
Awesome idea! You'll have a lot of fun there.
As for the links, do it like that:
(url=YOURURL)YOUR LINK TEXT(/url), only with instead of ().
Example: you want to link to your (fictional) homepage straken.com, you type (url=http://www.straken.com/)my straken homepage(/url) with the brackets instead of the () and you will have a link reading "my straken homepage" pointing to your (fictional) straken homepage...
That's the most epic idea ever. It's like a movie, only instead of a gun battle on in paris it's....Warhammer.
