I have seen lists that spam PE's all over the plave....and when ever the topic of PE's show up there is all ways at least one person who says "If you take any Penitent Engines at all take at least six."
My question is....Is there anyone on these forums that own that many PE's? and what are the games like? Can that many still survive to make into CC?
Just some musing as to expand my sisters army I eather have to buy six engines or start taking guard.
Take guards instead. PE's mean no exorcists or immolators. If you want fun, try proxying them a few games. If you want competitve, you know which units you have to use.
You can still take Immolators as transports...spamming the two would be fun.
I have used 2 at a time in several games only to find them ripped apart by heavy wpns, or in one case rather unceremoniously mashed by a venerable dreadnought before laying a single spikey hand on it! Great models, look very cool on the board and maybe 6 would be more competitive espescially if against a waaargh or tyranids maybe??
It could work against armies that don't have the guns to take down a lot of them but than you're going to run into the armies that can.....and that's a bad time. It's already been said they take away one of your better ranged anti-armor options and they aren't all that cheap.
Seems more like something you'd run for fun and watch the mayhem to me.
I know that it's hard to pull off and would work against armies that don't have much shootie anti armor. I do like having the option how ever and believe that if you put some thought into any list and don't mind getting creative while waging war you can put the hurt down on anyone. I know that you would loose a high and mighty Exorcist, but I feel more than confident that you do not need two Exo's to win...When I play most people get rightly scared of the Exorcist and focus all of their anti tank on destrying thing...With six PE's and a handfull of Melta Immolators I wonder If people could get enogh shots off fast enough?
I know it is ridiculous, but sometimes the same ol tried and true sister list get a little old to play and you get the urge to try something crazy just to see if it works...We all can't play tournies all the time and it is in the garages at two in the morning and an empty case of beer do you realy enjoy the game.
A lot of armies could get the shots off. The only thing you're doing is making them pick, kill the PEs or stop the rush. 6 PEs is 480 points plus the Inquisitor you have to take who is either cheap and useless or expensive and....still sorta useless.
You're forcing the same decision with a bigger rush backed by Exorcists or just an all out rush. PEs give you a tarpitter who can hurt gunlines but if you're a SoB player you need to know how to do that with Rhinos already or you lose a lot.
I'm a big believer in quirky, original lists because of the surprise factor but sadly all your buying is a non scoring, similar speed walker who will do less damage overall and is EASIER to blowup than a Rhino. Just not very good really. It adds nothing you need to an army and that's my basis for condemning them.
I've proxied a 9PE list at 1500 a couple of times. in 5th ed it was more fun than in 4th ed.
I did face the new horde orks with them, and the poor orkses got beaten to a pulp. Between the Inq. Dakka, and IST's laying down Grenade launchers, then the PE's frying a whole buncha orks, then beating face, it was pretty impressive.
I'm not saying it would stand up competitively at all, it's just for for a 'What the HECK are you doing?!?" reaction.

Just for gits and shiggles...What did you use as proxies for your PE's? They are damn big models...Eldar wraithlords perhaps?
I have 3 on my own, a friend has another 3. I used 6 and 9 of them in Apocalypse games. They did some damage but mostly were there for the fluff. Taking them in a regular 1500pts game is probably a questionable choice if you want a competitive army. If you are looking for a "fun" army, that I think you should do it and not care what other people think at all. Their life expectancy depends very much on what army are you going to go against. One thing is certain - the new squadron rules do not help them in 5th at all...
