Hi there all! Fist Time posting.
I'm currently fielding the black templars and i have herd and see some of the new things included in the new space marines codex, ie: ironclad dread, master of the forge, and such.
Now my codex predates the new marine codex, so i was wondering if there is any ruling about using the new codex in conjunction with the bt codex to be albe to field such characters. Any insight into the matter would be great since i have gotten mixed answers from friends.
Good question, if your playing in a tournament then the answer would be no you would have to stick to what's in the codex as written from your army. Playing with friends is different though so i would say that you ask them before you play if they agree then sure feel free to field the newer models etc. If they say no you will have to stick to the codex. Also remember black templars can not take Psykers so no librarians. Otherwise the army would be a little unfluffy.
Hi. Welcome to LO.
Whilst there is no official ruling about this, it's incredibly unfair. What you're basically doing is taking the best things from one codex and adding it to another codex to get a super codex. So in short, NO NO NO NO NO A THOUSAND TIMES NO! I personally can't stand it. I find it unfair. But, in a tournament it's disallowed, in a friendly match, as long as you have your opponents permission, it'll be fine. Personally i have a gripe against this sort of thing but, it's up to your friends really.
Hope i helped.

Although the rulebook never comes flat out to say that your army must only contain units from a single codex, it is greatly implied throughout the rulebook, especially in the organising a battle section on p. 86, which is only cemented by both the allies matrix for appocalypse, and the allies sections of both the daemonhunter and witch hunter codices.
Ask me about the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White Bike!!!
The question you must ask yourself is... would you allow an Eldar player to field units from the Tyranids codex as part of his regular army?
If the answer is no, then the answer to your own question is no. Codex: Black Templars and Codex: Space Marines are 100% stand alone codices and the only time you can (legally, by the rules) field them together is when you are playing an Apocalypse game. They both have Space Marines in them, but that is merely a technicality; they are as different as the two examples used above.
You can, of course, get permission from friends to use units from both books, but that's a moot point; you could also get permission from friends to give every one of your models +10 attacks, or they may let you use 500 more points in your list than their own. You can do anything you want if your opponent consents.
BTs, DA, and BA should use all the rules and points costs for new gear in their books, just like SW Drop Pods and Land Raiders should have the same number of seats as Vanilla Pods. What color you paint your gear should not determine its effect, that's just stupid.
But, as per RAWR (Rules as Written by Retards), they can't. Go over it with your group, if they're reasonable you'll be fine, but tournies are generally going to say no.

Currently you cannot take advantage of things like Ironclads, but take heart, neither can dark angels or the new space wolves.
To be honest I wouldn't really expect too much in a new codex either, whenever it happens. Space wolves don't have a master of the forge, or ironclads. Neither do Dark Angels. Part of the reason these chapters got their own codices was that they were different enough from normal chapters to matter. As such, some of the more specialized stuff might not be represented in a new BT codex either.
While its not entirely orthodox, you could look at some of the forge world stuff for a little more variety to the codex.
You could paint Black Templars and use Vanilla Codex, just buy conservatively until the new BT templars codex comes out, so you dont have a pile of models you can't use.
Or just make your own chapter from BT models and stick with Vanilla codex permanently.
Depends on how much you like the BT fluff...
Space Wolves: Great Company of Berek Starkiller, 3700 pts.
Imperial Guard: XII Cytherian Regiment: 1400 pts.
15 years experience, numerous other models not fielded.
First i want to thank everyone that posted for the topic, i see arguments for both sides and i like to see that. As far as my personal opinion is concerned i think that GW could be a bit better prepared when releasing a codex that has an impact on other smaller/specific codicies. I feel that same way that Bleep Bloop does in that fact that even thought the Black Templar are a seperate faction they are still Space Marines. And I am not saying that i want to be able to field stuff and the other specific codecies like dark angels and space wolfs cant, by no means. I'm saying that any space marines company should be able to use the newer codex, at the very least untill updated codicies for the companys come out.
Again Thanks for all the input!
I'd say stay with the BT codex.
I've played against BT forces before, and they do quite well with their 4th edition codex.
