Ok my next match is a total of 3k per side with 1500pts per player (2 players on each side). So me and my nid friend dont expect to win this match but we want to know what we could do to "soften the blow" as we are playing 2 tau players. Now we havent got any restrictions to be fair to them but we are expecting 6 broadsides and 4 railheads. I was thinking LR but with that many rail heads plus maybe 6 squads of suits we dont think that is a really good option.
Any advise is appreciated
I don't have to much experience fighting tau since my buddy went off to college, but from what I understand you need to get on top of him as quickly as possible. The nids player will need to infiltrate his broodlord and stealers, maybe deepstrike some raveners, use a flyrant, ect. You're not going to out shoot them, especially with Nids, but once you get into melee you will tear them to shreds. Actually, Lictors do really well against Tau because they'll bring your deepstrikers in faster.
For you, shrouding is going to be a lifesaver. THe raider might be risky, but we have old school smoke so move forward, keeping cover as best you can and if you can't get cover, you have smoke to protect you for a turn.
My suggestion for facing tau Sheer numbers and Melee. You're not going to be able to outshoot them with a GK/Nid combo, so concentrate on what you CAN beat them at.
In my experience (We have a few Tau players in the local league), Tau are great at taking out big single targets, but less so at dealing with hordes, and aside from Farsight or Kroots, not so good at melee. Try to avoid expensive units like GK Termies or tank squads, unless you WANT to draw fire to them and away from something else.
Also don't forget that if they have markerlight guns, they can make your cover nonexistant, so don't rely on it.
If you do take vehicles, take a lot, b/c one or two will just scream "RAILGUNS GO HERE"

"The objective is to win, the point is to have fun."
I agree with Jemal, just take all the Stealers and Hormagaunts you can find. The casualties will be horrendous but you'll make it and than the tide turns.
The major point of worry is the Tau tanks. They can avoid your CC monsters. The best bet is Venom Cannons or some other guns that can shake AV12-13 a ton. Tau have no Extra Armor so all you have to do is stop the guns for a little while and close the gap.
Lictors would be something I'd abuse. Jump out and wreck Broadsides, Crises Suits or even Hammerheads if they foolishly didn't move it.
Try to avoid taking more MCs than you need. Tyrants with Guard are a safe bet because of the wound shield and they shoot well. Use them for anti-armor and don't be sad if they die. Warriors for back up Synapse is good as well.
For the DH I'd just load up on vehicle damagers. Land Raiders and Dreads will die fast. Inducted Guard are a good bet and you can try GK using the bugs as cover. They'll probably die, being such juicy targets but sacrifices have to be made. DSing GK squads might work as well, especially if they drop away from Crisis Suits.
STICK TO COVER!

2 times I played Tau with my DH and I was outnumbered. The 1st game it was 1500 DH vs 2000 Tau. The second was also 1500 DH vs 2000 Tau. I took 3 LR's in the 1st game (w/smokes & EA) and barely lost. In the 2nd game I had 4 LR's and pulled out a draw but had a good chance at winning.
Take 2-3 LR Crusaders w/smokes and let his broadsides/railheads concentrate on them. Then tell your partner to take 2-3 carnifexes and let your opponents pick their poison. Should they shoot down the LR's w/grey knights in them or those 2-3 carnifexes? Meanwhile you buy time for your troops to get closer. Though they have a lot of S10 AP1 weaponry, don't underestimate the resiliency of LR's and 5W T7 2+ carnifexes.
