Ok, so I'm about to start up a new Crimson Fists army and I want to include some squads of Sternguard Vets to be used alongside Pedro.
However, im unsure what kind of role Sternguards should play in my army:
Should I put them in Rhinos/Razorbacks or Drop Pod them in?
Should I make them footsloggers or keep them back rather than pushing them forwards?
What Combi-weapons should I give them? (Combi-weapons are the only weapons I plan on upgrading them with: why lose that special ammo?)
What units should I complement them with in my army?
so how do you guys play your sternguards and wat kind of role do they have in your SM army?
Okies, I use sternguard as much as I can. Got two units of ten and always field some if not all if the points allow.
I run one squad with PF, 4xCombi-melta and the other 2xCombi-melta, 2xHeavy-flamer. I can obviousy mix and match these two squads together if I need to.
Combi melta deals with the one target type that the special ammo can't. That of armour. For only 5 pts you can now kill anything on the board!
Although you do loose the special ammo, Sternguard are the only unit that can take heavy flamers. Before you dismiss them they are the most potent weapon in my sternguard squad. Kills most enemy troops on 3's with no armour save or cover save and, if needs be, can still assault. The power should not be ignored! Against any horde army or those with 4+ armour it will do you proud.
In my opinion the best use of Stenguard is right in the enemies face. I usually drop mine in right next to a unit or two I want rid of. Out thet jump, combat squad and pop a tank or take out a squad/MC. Although they sometimes don't live for longer than a couple of turns it does mean that the enemy HAVE to concentrate on killing them, so leaving your other units to do their moves etc with less incoming fire. Your opponent can not ignore such a lethal unit in his deployment.
Hope that helps.
Thanks alot. Do you drop pod in other units along with your Sterngards?
i/e is it advisable to use Sternguards in a drop pod assault force, along with other units dropping in or are your Sternguards your only troops that drop pod in at the start of the battle?
I think they're best used as the rest of your army is. You don't want an expensive unit like that getting cut down because your Rhinos are to slow. I'd mount them as your army is mounted.
For the guns, Combi-Meltas kick ass. Their ammo can kill anything except armor, so why not kill armor also? Flamers are popular also but they're so versatile it seems wise to increase that versatility.

A game in point recently.
I was using 1500 pts (if memory serves, may have been 1750) v Tau.
I had.....10 Sternguard with 2xCombi-melta and 2xHeavy-flamer, Pedro, 2x full bike squads with assault bikes and 2x typhoon LS's, HQ bike squad with Khan.
Turn 1 the Sternguard and Pedro dropped in onto the objective in the Tau deployment. Combat squaded and took out 16 Fire warriors and a Broadside. Bikes moved about without taking a single shot as the whole Tau army turned to take out the sternguard.
Turn 2 5 Sterngurad down but both combat squads still operating. Pedro took some hits but still shooting. Another Broadside down, 6 Firewarriors and 6 of their railrifle guys (forgotten the name). Tau kill Pedro and 2 more sterguard and have a go at a bike squad taking out about half.
Turn 3 The remaining Sternguard get gunned down but not before killing a full squad of Kroot. Typhoons turn up and shoot up the remaing Firewarrior squad. Crisis suits arrive to deal with the Sternguard and pop a few shots at a bike squad killing a couple.
As you can see teh Sternguard are causing HAVOC.
Turn 4 Typhoons and bikes take down 4 Crisis suits. Game nearly over. At this point One objective is contested and I have 2. He has no way of taking or contesting the 2 I have. We keep plonking away at each other for another 2 turns.
The sternguard won the game. Yea, they died but stopped the Tau dead and did all the work for me. Points very well spent.
I've been using small Sternguard squads to precision strike high threat. Along with the above posters, combi-meltas are wonderful, as are the combi-flamers.
Main method of transport has been DP. Get them where you want to be, and use their ammo, and rapid fire.
Full squad if I can, PF, 4 x combi-meltas. Although I haven't used it yet the heavy flamer is worth it's weight in gold versus troops.
Now, if I'm using Pods I usually drop them in with a pair of Dreadnoughts (Ironclad and standard w/ MM/HF). Never leave them out to dry in my opinion. Always give them support by putting something 'scary' next to them.
With my mech list I usually place them into a Rhino and follow my LR with a squad of TH/SS Terminators and Vindicator(s).

Salamander project log
1. Give them combi-meltas.
2. Shove them in a drop-pod.
3. No, they don't lose their "special" ammo.
Drop them close to a "hard to crack" tank, or a nasty surprise to a MEQ HQ.
I don;t see the need to fix your force around them, so just make the one you want. Though dropping a anti-troop squad, or two, with your sternguard will protect them against anti-troop fire in return.
Where do you find a Heavy flamer designed to fit a Space Marine? I have never seen one on a bitz website.
The Cadian Command sprue has one, maybe just needs a bit of cuttin'/choppin'.
Theres also the Terminator Squad Heavy Flamer, but once again will need 'adjustment'.
Thats all I can think of.
Space Wolves: Great Company of Berek Starkiller, 3700 pts.
Imperial Guard: XII Cytherian Regiment: 1400 pts.
